5-0 out of 5 stars Already a Classic in my family
I've had to buy this book twice. I passed it along to my sons (as I do once in a blue moon with maybe every one book out of 12 I read). My third son in line refused to give it back, wanted it for his small-but-vital-reading bookshelf. Thought I might have to buy it a third time when friends returned my 2nd copy a bit tattered. Love the free-verse prose. Love the story and characters. LOVE this BOOK! C'mon, Toby. We need another book from you; I'll buy on pre-order even before the critics review it or I know the subject matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than I Hoped
I really enjoyed this book - much more than I thought I would - an epic poem set in LA would not normally be my type of reading-for-fun, but the werewolf aspect really brought this to life. It was a lot of fun, vivid writing and stronger characters than I thought. It was really great!

5-0 out of 5 stars The dark side of puppy love
Los Angeles has always disturbed me. All that sunshine. Those über-toned bodies. Packs of werewolves roaming the canyons and arroyos. It's enough to make any catlover nervous.

In this awesome, exuberant, first book Toby Barlow strips away the city's thin veneer of civilization and lays bare its raw, violent, lycanthropic underbelly. It's the cross-species love story between dogcatcher Anthony and his damaged werewolf lover, which unfolds against a backdrop of drugs, murder, revenge, and the battle for pack dominance. It's noir, funny, riveting, tender, completely over the top, and by rights it shouldn't work at all. But it does - it's completely addictive and unexpectedly moving.

Part of its power is a consequence of Barlow's choice to write it in free verse. The resulting rhythm gives the whole story a driving momentum that keeps the reader riveted -- I read the whole book in two sittings. The plot, which seemed inextricably complicated at the halfway mark, is resolved neatly by the end, though I do feel that I need to give the book a second reading to figure out the various strands. The sheer momentum built up by Barlow's verse works against a careful reading, so I anticipate that a second reading will bring further rewards.

If you have time for only one lycanthropic love story this summer, then look no farther than "Sharp Teeth". Don't be put off by the fact that it's written in free verse, after the first few pages you won't be able to imagine it any other way.

Toby Barlow can be proud of this remarkably impressive debut.

2-0 out of 5 stars Superficial & stereotypical action/thriller ready for Michael Bay
My interest in Sharp Teeth was piqued partially from a review, but moreso by the cover. Superficial, I know, but then again, this book's story contained superficial portraits of its characters and not much else. A decent book if you're sitting by the pool in the summer with drink in hand and distractions, but not a book to read if you're looking for interesting characters or ideas. I wouldn't be surprised if this book is turned into a major motion picture soon simply because it has supernatural characters, violence, and romance (a la Twilight.)

The book's written in somewhat of a poetry form, thankfully, as its 300+ pages would have dragged on otherwise. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, and I first found myself quite interested by Anthony, the newest dog catcher at an LA pound. However, after barely scratching the surface of this character, Barlow introduces many more and paints them with only the vaguest of brushes. All the stereotypical action characters are here: the loner hero, the pretty blonde, the love-torn brunette, the government suits, the back-stabbers. But none prove to be very interesting. I got to the end of the book and didn't really care what happened to any of the characters.

With its shallow characters, attempted plot twists, and typos, the book seemed as if it could have been a project written in a high school creative-writing course. I counted more than one "its" that should have been "it's" or vice versa, a misspelling of Pasadena, and other errors the editors should be ashamed to have missed.

Worst of all were the grade-school level similes. Seemingly every page seemingly had at least one contrived simile ("His insecurity dissolves like smoke in the wind..."). And some of the phrases were simply a waste of time to read ("All he had, it turned out, was love. She was gone, but her love was still alive inside him. It was the only thing keeping him on this earth, the only reason he could find to continue, to protect that one part of her that still remained, her love for him, the small ray of light that lay within the shadowed hollows of his heart.")

Oh well - at least Michael Bay will have absolutely no problem translating this onto the big screen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wolf this down!
This book sat on the table forever...I avoided it. Even though I love poetry I was not prepared to read an entire book-length epic about, of all things, werewolves.

But then I read the first page, laughed out loud, and didn't want to put it down!

What a sly and seductive work this is.
At first glance, it's merely a tale of werewolf--or weredog--gangs (packs), but with a closer reading, it's a heck of a piece of literature with lots of humor and layers of meaning tucked in amongst the gore (which wasn't all that gory by today's standards).

Free verse is anything but "free." Instead it's complex and dependent on syntax, diction, metaphor and allusion rather than meter and rhyme. Barlow hits some true highs with his verse. It's uneven...some spots are mundane, but others sublime. Exceptional for a first novel, certainly exceptional for a first epic poem.

This work perhaps owes a debt to "Howl"(Ginsburg)--if only conceptually, and as an a pun. Can't be avoided.
There is also the sympathetic main character, Anthony the unlikely dogcather (St. Anthony being the patron saint of animals).
From there we meet a bad guy named Goyo (ring a bell? Mexican serial killer? cruel to animals...), and dog-people with names like Bone (T-Bone Burnett? Werewolves of London?), Blue (a multitude of famous dogs and dog breeds, including Blue of Blue's Clues)and Maria (West Side Story).
We find a rumble in a junkyard, "Peter" who has a distinct problem with a particular wolf, a philosophy of life, Ukan, which may indeed be math, but seems just as likely to be Eukanuba dog food. And my favorite...dogs who play cards (Coolidge paintings).

In fact, Barlow manages with great subtle humor to reference just about everything canine (and sometimes gang) from Go Dog Go to Coyote the Trickster sitting at the feet of Aristotle--and this elevated what might otherwise have been another dull werewolf tale into the realm of true fun literary style. His agile use of language and poetry form--to get the best bang for his syntax buck--was pure enjoyment.

This was a delight to read, and if some reviewers didn't like the tone of the ending, well, perhaps this was, as you might expect if Coyote were involved...a shaggy dog story. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth getting for the illustrations alone
Story about the small Maine town of Tanker Mills. Inexplicably it's attacked by a werewolf once a month when the full moon is out. Young Marty Coslaw finds out who the werewolf is...but nobody will believe him.

Stephen King is a great writer but this story is pretty thin. The plot is predictable, the characters familar and it's completely by the numbers. The only reason I give this four stars is for the incredible illustrations by Berni Wrightson. Each month is introduced with a two page black and white drawing and inside each month there's a one page color drawing. The artwork is just great--it brings the paper thin story and characters to life. So get it for the illustrations. It was also made into the justly forgotten 1980s horror film "Silver Bullet".

4-0 out of 5 stars Got your silver bullets ready?
"Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November:
All the rest but the second have thirty-one,
Rain and snow and jolly sun.
And the moon grows fat in every one."

Stephen King's "Cycle of the Werewolf" is written in a very unique format. Rather then being a traditional novel, novella, or even a short story, it is more of a collection of short stories that form a single narrative, each taking place on the night of the full moon in a given month for an entire year in the town of Tarker Mills, Maine. In addition, each story features images which makes the format not unlike a comic book, and this is the absolute definition of light reading so I would call it akin to reading a comic. It's been long time since I've been able to regularly read novels, but it recently occurred to me that I've never reviewed a Stephen King book, which is unacceptable considering my online moniker. Then I remembered this baby, and figured I'd dig it out of my garage and revisit it. It's still a pleasant, brief read, and the illustrations are still enjoyable. There are certainly better King and better werewolf stories out there, but this one gets a special place because it is so much different from your usual horror fare. It was stretched into a full-length film as Silver Bullet, which has always struck me as an underrated were flick, but there really is no duplicating the power of King's written word.

Most of the monthly stories in "Cycle of the Werewolf" are only a few pages long, but it's really amazing how much character development Stephen King piles into it. An entire town of characters with daily habits, problems, worries, thoughts, hang-ups, and feelings is created here, which is extraordinary considering the brevity of the work. You roll your eyes whenever little paraplegic Marty Coslaws's dad uses his "booming Big Pal" voice to mask his disappointment in having an invalid for a son, you sense his sister's love and concern when she hisses that he always gets his way, and you are more then a little pleased when wifebeater Milt Sturmfuller meets an unlikely and ironic end. You can also sense the tension in the townsfolk as they await each full moon with dread, ot knowing who would be next. You could even sympathize with the beast somewhat, once his identity is revealed. King has always been the master of getting to know his characters inside and out, but his work here with a large cast and a very short book is just amazing. The attacks themselves are brief and savage, often leaving the reader with horrifyingly creepy thoughts. A wolf's snarling that sounds like human words is hard to imagine, but trying to imagine it freaks me the hell out.

Again, there are better stories, comics, and novels out there, but if you're anything like me you heard "Stephen King" and "werewolf" and were already sold. The book is pricey for it's length, but well worth it considering the quality of the story told. King writes a mean yarn and this is no exception. Plus: pretty pictures of decapitations and pig slaughter. Yay!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great looking book
The quality of the book itself physically is excellent and I loved the artist pics throughout but there isnt much to the story beyond the werewolf and his victims and though it has its moments, they go by so fast and its hard to feel very involved as a reader by the end. Its not terrible, better than most werewolf stories Ive come across. Its just not nearly as good as many of King's other works.
Its a good quick read and if you must own all King's works, then buy it here for the nice discount.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fast Read, Boring Plot
Cycle of the Werewolf, by Stephen King. It sounds promising, and starts off pretty good, but as the calender months start going by(the whole book is one giant calender) it starts to lag. By lag, I mean that the story begins to repeat itself, and once cool ideas turn boorrrrrinnnng. The artwork though(one for every month, the months are like chapters) is incredibly chilling and original, well worth the 15.95 cover price of the book alone. Berni Wrightson(the illustrator) should get the credit for this book, not Stephen King. A werewolf tale, this book is well worth reading for some scenes, but not most. Only for a die-hard fan of Stephen King. Basically, good for a quick, short scare but not much else. 3 stars, or Grade: C-.

4-0 out of 5 stars Four stars for story, five for illustrations!!!
I'm a reader and one day I did not, seemingly, have anything to read. I asked my son if he could suggest anything and he said Stephen King. He did not see me for about three months after that, and we live in the same apartment. I read almost everything Stephen King wrote. This book is a special book - I mean in general. Berni Wrightson's illustrations make it a book I would grab to save if there was a fire, and I have a lot of books. This story is not like the video. The book is nicely framed in twelve sections according to months, and so we are treated to a woodcut-like black and white picture first thing, and then to a color, very well executed, scary picture of a pivotal event, in every chapter. Good versus evil at its very best! - no spoiler. (And then Stephen King, in one of his books, turned me on to Stephen Dobyns, for which I am very grateful . . .) ... Read more

Remember back in the early 1980s when special-effects makeup artists were tripping over themselves to create the next big effect? The Howling boasted a fantastic werewolf transformation scene courtesy of makeup wizard Rob Bottin. Then along came Bottin's mentor, Rick Baker, with his own spectacular effects in this popular horror comedy directed by John Landis. An American Werewolf in London is more of a makeup showcase than a truly satisfying movie, but the film is effectively moody when David Naughton discovers that a wolf attack has turned him into a bloodthirsty lycanthrope. Jenny Agutter plays his love interest (watch out, he bites!), and who can forget Griffin Dunne as Naughton's best friend, an undead corpse who progressively rots away as the plot unfolds? All things considered, it's easy to see why An American Werewolf in London became a modern horror favorite. --Jeff Shannon

4-0 out of 5 stars American Werewolf in London Special Edition
Two American students are on a walking tour of England and are attacked by a Werewolf. One is killed, the other is mauled. The Werewolf is killed, but reverts to it's human form, and the townspeople are able to deny it's existence. The surviving student begins to have nightmares of hunting on 4 feet at first, but then finds that his friend and other recent victims appear to him, demanding that he find a way to die to release them from their curse, being trapped between worlds because of their unnatural death. A near definitive werewolf movie that's bloody, scary, funny, satirical, intelligent, sexy, charming and ultimately sad. With a soundtrack that's perfectly placed, and composer Elmer Bernstein perfectly placing the music. Grab the popcorn and hang on folks.

4-0 out of 5 stars American Werewolf in London
Good old movie. Grandchildren, seeing it for the first time, were not nearly as frighten as I was the first time I saw it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best werewolf movie ever? I think so
As much as An American Werewolf in London deserves an essay of praise, I would merely be preaching to the choir if I did so at this point. Not only the best werewolf movie ever made, but it ranks up there as one of the best horror films ever made.

Two American fellas traveling through rural England experience an unexpected disruption in their trip when they are attacked by a genuine werewolf. David, is the young man who survives the ordeal, but not without a price. He is now a werewolf himself, and worse yet, his victims are doomed to wander the earth in limbo until David is killed, or takes his own life.

Every aspect of An american Werewolf in London is top notch, and it is among the most revered titles in the horror/comedy genre. An essential film for any movie fanatic, if you've never seen it, it is recommended you do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite
This is one of my favorite horror movies. There is some funny parts to the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars AAOOOH Werewolves of London!!
I saw this movie in the theaters back in 1981 and was so happy to see Rick Baker win the first Oscar for best special effects make up! That whole transformation scene is classic and very impressive. It is both amusing and painful to watch. The wolf in this movie makes me feel real terror and fear. There are several scenes in London that make me grimace and tense up, even though I have seen this before. I bought this on BluRay disc because this movie needs to be seen in HD. I have always been a fan of all types of horror. There are very few movies that can mix humor with horror well for me to recommend but London does. It will always be on my list of best horror films. This is a much, much, much, better film than An American Werewolf in Paris. Get this movie either on DVD or BluRay, you won't be sorry!! ( I just have to ask myself, the ones that gave it one or two stars, are they even old enough to appreciate this movie?) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great film about a she wolf and her curse
A Werewolf in a Women's Prison is a very good movie and one of the best in terms of female werewolf films. The genre is rare and I've seen most of them and most of them aren't all that interesting. A woman is sent to a women's prison after surviving a werewolf attack that has killed her boyfriend and mauling her. As her wounds miraculously heal, what awaits her during the next full moon? This one has it all, pretty ladies, nudity, lesbians, cheesy gore effects, buckets of blood and a whole lot of bad dialog.

Highly recommended!

3-0 out of 5 stars Chupacabra Gurlz Gone Wild
Bodacious babes behind bars, a full moon werewolf that would make Roger Corman feel all warm and mushy inside and some occasionally good cine work make this B-Schlock gore fest worth a look. It's Chupacabra Gurlz Gone Wild!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Piece of Fun
A great movie combining 2 genres that have never been combined before. Werewolves and prison movies. Normally when you have a women in prison film it's a non-stop beat up the girl movie, but now you add the fact that the victim can transfor into a homicidal super powered wolf and the odds on the sadistic prison guards is not so good. A great film with great effects. Plenty of gore for all of the gorehounds but it also has a great story attached to it. It has parts that are an homage to "An American Werewolf in London" but is not ripping it off. Well worth getting and seeing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Werewolf in a Womens Prison

2-0 out of 5 stars werewolf?
I have no Idea what this film is but it's not a "werewolf" film..
The werewolf plot is kind of pasted on this film.
What this movie is really just a girl on girl softcore porn flick.
If your looking for that.. Then this is your film.

If not stay away.

it's all shot on video.
The werewolf makeup sucks and you only see it fortunately in the last 5 mins of the film.

About the only thing of any quality is the box art.

The only reason I give it 2 star's is that it's ok. softcore porn.
But not worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars The long awaited Misty Mundae werewolf film is now here!
An Erotic Werewolf in London is long awaited DVD release of a MIsty Mundae film that was shot several years ago. The film is now available in a two disc collector's edition. THis movie is part Interview with a Vampire, An American Werewolf in London and a whole lot of HLA. It has the usual bad humor, off-the-wall-acting and the overall weirdness that you'll find in you typical Seduction Cinema production. An eastern european she-wolf bites Misty and curses her with lycanthropy. The werewolf decides to give a reporter the interview-of-a-lifetime. Films splits into two story lines, one dealing with Misty and the werewolf who tells a reporter her life story. The other disc has a gallery of MIsty Mundae trailers and a bonus film.

Highly recommended!

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good bet for Misty Fans
An Erotic Werewolf in London tells the story of a lesbian lycanthrope (Anoushka, Play-Mate of the Apes) -- do I need to mention that the film doesn't even bother to give us character names? -- who is seduced by a bartender (Misty Mundae, Spiderbabe). After some post-coital biting, the bartender now suffers from the werewolf curse. Meanwhile, our initial lycanthrope heads to London to tell her story to a British tabloid. This plot device allows for a lot of flashbacks involving werewolves and lesbians. Meanwhile, our bartender is ill from the effects of the bite and is tended by a number of naughty nurses. Eventually, Misty's werewolf turns and meets a tragic fate.

The previous paragraph makes the film sound a lot more coherent than it really is. In reality, the 68-minute film skips from lesbian scene to lesbian scene with a minimum of dialogue and narrative drive. The couplings themselves are above average for Seduction Cinema, with some real chemistry between the participants and no annoying interruptions from guys in gorilla suits. Those looking for wicked werewolves should go elsewhere, as this film sticks with a minimalist aesthetic. We're talking claws, fangs, and the barest wisps of hair to preserve the erotic half of the "erotic werewolf" equation.

Ostensibly, the film's star is Anoushka, although her silicone-enhanced assets are atypical for Seduction Cinema films. However, fans of Misty Mundae need not despair, for she commands almost as much screen time as Anoushka, and gets the better pairings of the two, including encounters with Ruby LaRocca, Darian Caine, and Julian Wells.

Shot on three different formats, the video is a predictably mixed bag. It doesn't look horrible by Seduction standards, but it won't win any awards. The best I can say about it is that there are no problems which make it difficult to make out the ladies. The audio is slightly worse, with a lot of variability in the quality and volume of the various effects and dialogue. But, since there wasn't much dialogue in the first place, it's hardly a huge complaint

4-0 out of 5 stars Misty the Hot Werewolf and Ruby the Zombie Punkette
Although its title would imply that this is another of Seduction Cinema's sexy spoofs, `An Erotic Werewolf in London' is, for the most part, a straight forward softcore skinfest with lycanthropic eroticism added to the Sapphic couplings. The erotic content is pretty good with Misty Mundae looking stunning throughout. The other main players are Ruby LaRocca and Anoushka, both of whom are excellent in this movie. But Seduction Cinema aficionados be warned: the sex scenes between Anoushka and Ruby have been lifted from Erotic Diary of Misty Mundae. It's true that these scenes happen to fit in with the `Werewolf' movie quite well, but it's disappointing that some previously unused footage could not have been found.

The action begins with Misty and Ruby in the bar that they run. Having closed for the night, the ladies are feeling frisky and get straight down to naked business on the counter. Anoushka arrives as the ladies are having a nightcap. Misty is clearly smitten by the newcomer and invites her into the backroom where more yumminess follows. Anoushka is a werewolf, her transformation occurring at the point of climax: a smidgen of additional body hair, extra long fingernails and large teeth, all the better to bite Misty with. And we all know what happens to those who survive being bitten by a werewolf, don't we?

So what's all this got to do with London? Not a lot. Yes, there are some scenes in London and we get to see the usual landmarks: Houses of Parliament, red telephone box (not many of those left nowadays, though) and the entrance to a London Underground station. Reluctant reporter from `The Daily Limey', Zoe Moonshine, is dispatched to get the scoop on the werewolf woman whose home is in England's capital city.

The cast is almost all female. The only exceptions are John Link who plays Zoe's editor(!) and Jeff Shields who plays Misty's doctor. There are cameos from Darian Caine and Julian Wells as Misty's nurses. Their intimate ministrations naturally bring out the beast in Misty. If you'd like to see Darian in another werewolf movie, you may like to check out the slightly dodgy Curse of the Wolf.

`An Erotic Werewolf in London' is a decent softcore erotic movie. Some may be disappointed at the relative lack of werewolf activity, but the sex scenes are well performed and very nice to look at, and they're a little stronger than those contained in Seduction's recent releases. Misty, Ruby and Anoushka are wonderful in this movie. Unfortunately, Zoe Moonshine keeps her clothes on throughout, but for those who'd like to see more of this lovely lady, check out The Devil's Bloody Playthings, Les Chic 2-DVD Collection and Bikini Girls on Dinosaur Planet/Bikini Goddesses all of which, like `An Erotic Werewolf in London', were directed by Bill Hellfire.

There's no behind the scenes documentary on this DVD which is a pity, but listening to Bill Hellfire (writer/director) and Michael Raso's (producer) audio commentary is interesting as they talk about the film's long road to DVD release (it began filming in 2001). There's a featurette called `Reminiscing With Ruby' in which the wonderful Ruby LaRocca talks about her films for Seduction and Factory 2000. "I've never regretted anything I've done. I had so much fun making those movies, why would I be ashamed of any of that?" she asks. She also points out that she would not have got any of the parts in horror movies outside of the Seduction Cinema fold (such as Flesh for the Beast (Unrated Edtion) and Shadow: Dead Riot: Special Edition) if she hadn't appeared in films such as Dr. Jeckyll & Mistress Hyde. On the audio commentary, Michael Raso talks about a Seduction Cinema actress whose feelings are apparently somewhat different to Ruby's.

Fans of Ruby LaRocca will be delighted to know that she has a major role in the film on the second DVD in this set: `Night of the Groping Dead'. In the Laundromat, having loaded the machine, Ruby decides to pass the time by having some "alone fun" after which, topless, she falls prettily asleep on a table. Then, wouldn't you know it, a zombie enters the premises. On seeing the charming Ruby, the zombie begins to grope her. Ruby is groped a lot in this movie, she's naked a good deal of the time and she's covered in blood a lot too, much of it spewing from her mouth and over her breasts. Now ensconced as Queen of the Zombies, Ruby desires a mate and who better to fulfil that role than Misty Mundae?

`Night of the Groping Dead' is something of a sleazy delight. Ruby is superb in this film. A lot of attention is lavished on her with the groping scenes particularly strong for a softcore movie and, as usual, the sex scenes between Ruby and Misty are lovely.

Seduction Cinema have produced a good package with this release. Fans of Misty Mundae and Ruby LaRocca will definitely want to add it to their collections.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth The Wait?
Shot in 2001 and finally seeing a release in June 2008, "An Erotic Werewolf In London" has many old-school Seduction Cinema fans anxiously anticipating the now-classic lineup of Misty Mundae, Julian Wells, Ruby LaRocca and Darian Caine. Filmed partially in London by William Hellfire and also closer to home by John Bacchus, "Erotic Werewolf" sticks decently close to the framework of John Landis's 80s masterpiece, but trades in much of the humor for girl-girl softcore tomfoolery. While it may not be the "erotic parody" longtime fans might be hoping for, it's got everything else you'd expect from a Seduction Cinema film. What's great about this one taking so long to come out is the packaging and presentation, neither of which would have been nearly as high quality back in 2001 or 2002. The film is presented in a 2-disc set, one containing the film with director commentary and the second featuring the full-length movie "Night Of The Groping Dead". My favorite thing about this disc turned out to be a brand-new interview with Ruby LaRocca, who regales us with a look behind the scenes at what it's like to make a Seduction Cinema movie. She is very engaging, funny and honest. I'd like to see the company include things like this more often. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars GOOD COPY, LOUSY MOVIE
I, LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE, AM A JUNKIE FOR WEWEWOLF MOVIES. AND SO, AND ALSO BECAUSE I'VE HAD A CRUSH ON BARBARA RUSH SINCE I WAS A KID, I TOOK A CHANCE ON THIS TURKEY. FUGGEDABOUTIT!!!!! THIS FILM IS A TRAVESTY, AND AN EMBARRASSMENT TO ALL WHO APPEARED IN IT. OR IT CERTAINLY SHOULD BE. IT GIVES THE GENRE A BAD NAME. THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS BOMB IS THE BOX COVER!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Moon of the Wolf
Good old fashion werewolf movie, with a touch of mystery. Who is the werewolf in this small Southern town? The Sheriff(David Jensen) must try to keep a lid on the hysteria of the locals, and deal with the ultra rich who have controlled the town for generations. His best friend the town doctor is a prime suspect, and he is falling in love with the local rich man's (Bradford Dillman)sister (Barbara Rush). Bradford doesn't want such a common man like the sheriff as a brother in law. The hunt is on as more and more locals are torn to pieces, before the sheriff can believe there really can be something as evil as a werewolf. I also enjoyed the essence of Southern small town living, and to be able to drift back to the 1970's when the world wasn't so complex. Just remember this is a simple movie to loose yourself in and enjoy a fantastic cast with outstanding performances.

3-0 out of 5 stars A CHILLING SOUTHERN GOTHIC
Based on the novel of the same name by author Les Whitten, MOON OF THE WOLF is a surprisingly well-crafted made-for-TV thirller from the 70s. Now available in a number of video versions, this is a little-known but quite serviceable production of some merit. Set in the isolated Louisiana marshland, the story revolves around the local Sheriff's efforts to uncover the truth behind a young girl's mysterious and grisly death. Was she killed by wild dogs, or by an ex-lover's revenge? Acting is very good all-around, with David Janssen well-cast as the no-nonsense but likeable sheriff and Barbara Rush as the Southern Belle with a few secrets of her own. The script is good, and the suspense methodically rises as the story progresses. The only real weakness, as is often the case with low-budget horror films, is the monster make-up. The eponymous werewolf doesn't look anything like the creature in the DVD art, but at least the director has the sense to keep the monster in the shadows most of the time so that the viewer's imagination can take up the slack. The climax is something of a surprise, even if you've read the novel, as the hero in the end isn't exactly who you think it's going to be. Splatterpunks won't find what they're looking for here, but those who can enjoy a good mystery or a decent little scary movie should be satisfied. Much better than its rather unfortunate reputation, MOON OF THE WOLF is worth a look.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Tonight on the A.B.C. Monday night movie"
Yeap, found another of the movies I loved as a kid. Well in truth I've had this one for years(and many times over, I have it in at least four different mega movie packs),bit this is the best copy I have of this corny but effective "Werewolf" chiller from the 70's.
David Janssen(the Original "Fugitive" and a long time favorite of mine) leads the cast as a southern sheriff looking into a rash of killings in his town. There is a level of carnage about the killings that points more toward an animal than a man.
Nothing great here to be sure, but it does have a very sinister feel about the investigation as the leads start pointing to something supernatural, and the attacks step up.
As for the cheese factor, sure it's a 70's T.V. movie, it's going to look fake. If you don't want to pay this much buy one of those mega movie packs and get 49 other movies for about $20.00.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bradford Dillman As The Amish-Cajun Loup-Garou!
If my title makes no sense to you, then you are mentally prepared to see this movie. (If it does, I suggest professional help at once.) This 1972 made for TV stinker stars the normally respectable David Janssen as a sheriff in a backwater Louisiana town trying to track a savage killer.

The story starts with the murder of a girl, and false leads abound: she was pregnant by one guy, smuggling drugs for another, romantically involved with a third, etc. Despite the small town soap opera, David Janssen makes an arrest, but finds he has the wrong guy when the arrestee and a deputy are savagely killed. Throughout this mess there is the old, dying psychic man babbling in French (remember, this is Cajun country) about the "loup-garou." At first I had absolutely no clue what he was going on about, as "loup-garou" is not in my French vocabulary. A quick consultation with my French dictionary shed some light on the situation: "loup-garou" means "werewolf" in French.

When all is said and done it turns out that the werewolf is none other than Bradford Dillman, the smarmy aristocratic Cajun Mogul-in-Chief. The movie doesn't show the werewolf until close to the end, but believe me bad movie fans, it is worth the wait. The makeup makes Dillman look like a very Amish werewolf in the facial hair department. He is also a spectacularly scrawny, agile, and whiny werewolf. I am especially fond of the "werewolf in the flaming barn" shots which are perhaps the least realistic depiction of fire that I have ever seen in a movie. I will not give away the stirring conclusion to the film, but suffice it to say that you won't be even a bit surprised.

This one gets two stars for campy entertainment value. David Janssen is not bad as the sheriff; the rest of the cast is less good, while the townsfolk are downright creepy. A wardrobe warning: be prepared for Janssen's habit of unbuttoning his shirt way too low; his chest hair looks more like a weasel pelt attached to his anterior by Velcro. What I am saying here is that it is really not a good look for him. Recommended for fans of bad movies, werewolf completists, or David Janssen fans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bad Moon- it will kill 4 people in 79min
Bad Moon is a decent werewolf flick and even though only 4 people die it is still quite bloody

Plot- a man is attacked by a werewolf, so he seeks help from the family (who dont know the truth), now a mother, her child, and the child's dog (main hero) must try to stop his ravenous butchery!

Acting- quite bad

Gore- a head crushed, a slit throat, a ripped throat, a head blown off with a shot gun, and an off-screen killing, i now it has 5 gore scenes but 1 of them belongs to one of the werewolfs either in the beggining or end i'm not telling

Bottom Line- 3 out of 5, good plot, bad acted, good bloody gore, i liked it

Rated R for horror violence and gore, brief language and a scene of sexuality/ Time 79min/ 1996/ Color

5-0 out of 5 stars Bad Moon
I gave this to my husband as Christmas gift and he just enjoy watching it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary Werewolf.
I really enjoyed this movie. I'm a huge werewolf fan,and to have one with really good actors, is a plus. The cast is convincing, and so was the werewolf costume. Menacing, animatronic face, mangy body. I really liked the design. What I did not like was the transformation scene. Absolutely awful CGI morphing technique.Really killed the moment for me. If they had left out that twenty seconds of footage, I would consider this a masterpiece. It's not a fast paced film, or full of action or anything like that, but If you like werewolves, you should like this one. If you do enjoy this, I would also consider watching SILVER BULLET. It's similar in it's moody atmosphere and build up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Above Par Werewolf Flick
"Bad Moon" is my second favorite Werewolf film "Silver Bullet" being my fav... Not alot of people know about this movie due to the fact that is was a straight to cable film and had no theatrical release that I'm aware of..But it is a great movie, read the Synopsis for the storyline and I will give you the reasons why I loved it.
Main reason is Thor the German Shepard who is in my opinion the star if the film.
Michael Pare's character..Moves his motor home next to the home of his sister and young nephew.Pare is not only gorgeous but great as the confused and conflicted brother and uncle fighting his inner demons and his appetite for human flesh as the newly anointed werewolf."he and his girlfriend were attacked(she killed) by a werewolf while on an expedition and he bitten.
It has some pretty graphic scenes which I always love. The transformation from man to werwolf with CGI isn't the best but I can overlook that because the rest of the movie is so good.
It all comes down to a showdown between "the Werewolf Pare" and Thor the huge German Shepard after trading insults like the dog peeing on the wheel of Pare's motor home and in turn Pare' leaving his mark on Thor's doghouse.
Will Thor be able to save his young master and mistress before it's too late?
Hmm, That's something you will have to find out..

3-0 out of 5 stars Thor, the leading man.. opps dog!
The best actor nomination goes to..... Thor!! The German Shepherd. I liked this movie pretty well. There are some large holes in the story line but one can get over them.( Having to do with hand cuffing oneself to a tree in the forest!) But it moves along in good order. I really did love the dog. Well trained and into his role. ( A little tongue in cheek here). I am happy that I bought it and the average viewer will probably enjoy it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just Okay
With each sequel, the plot becomes weaker, the acting terrible, and production values drop.

Buy it used (not over $5) and you shouldn't be too disappointed on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Horror
Classic horror on DVD with clear sharp picture and sound track. If you are building a classic horror library you will want this DVD to be included in this Lon Chaney, Jr. classic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Question on Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man
I saw one of the "Wolf Man" pictures with Lon Chaney when I was in one of the primary grades in elementary school. I was in the front row as they put the youngest and lowest grades in front as the children in the higher grades could see over our heads. It was on a Friday afternoon, and I, being just a child, had the hell scared out of me (the large bed sheet used as a screen was no more than 10 feet in front of me) when Larry Talbot changed into the Wolf Man in a jail cell, snarling and rattling the bars as the camera panned in for a closeup. To mention just how effective the special effects were at the time, that scene created a fear that lasted for a very long time. I was especially fearful at night when alone and for years afterward dreaded going into my dark bedroom. No matter how I tried to describe my fears to my parents, they could not understand and never allowed me have even the tiniest light to allay my anxieties. (They were not cruel . . . things were simply different in those days.)

Looking back, I think that those original "Wolf Man" movies were the state of the art in their day and there are few things new today that can compare with those ground-breakers.

This is the first time I came across the movie ("Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man") where I thought the scene was. It was not. Next I watched the first in the series, "The Wolf Man," and it was not in that movie either.

This is the first time I have seen any of the "Wolf Man" series since I saw that movie almost 70 years ago, and I can still picture that transformation from man into beast, with the creature wildly raging against the confines of the bars in the cell.

Is there anyone out there that recalls this scene and in which movie it occurs? Perhaps I am recalling the correct movie but the scene was not included in the re-release.

Thanks,

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Lon Chaney
This set has the best horror work done by Lon Chaney; the original "Wolf Man" and the follow-up movie, "Wolf Man Meets Frankenstein." I know the first movie by heart and see it often on TCM during Halloween. The second movie isn't shown as often and is one of my all-time favorites.

In the "Wolf Man Meets Frankenstein," they give us a chilling atmospheric opening. Two grave robbers break into the tomb of Lawrence Talbot, who died in the first movie. I won't spoil it for you if you haven't seen it but the grave robbers learn the error of their ways. Lawrence Talbot aka The Wolf Man is free again.

I hadn't seen "Werewolf of London," or "She-Wolf of London," in years. But the addition of these two movies doesn't distract one bit from the set. In "She Wolf," Lockwood is terrific as the frightened woman who thinks she's a werewolf. She may be, but I'm not saying!

In today's world of horror, this is tame enough for family viewing. If you have very young and easily-frightened children, maybe not. It would probably earn a PG rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best of Universials Monsters.
I am glad to add this to my collection but at the same time. I was dissapointed by only two of the Talbot Wolfman series. I admit to having never seen the other two movies of this collection. But I look forward to seeing them. I do recommned this collection of any fan of the Classic Horror movies. ... Read more

I can't remember this episode that much because I saw it a long time ago. I actually don't even own the dvd, I just rented it from the movie store. From what I remember this one is about a family who moves into this house by the woods. When the kid goes in the woods he gets lost. I remember they never really show the werewolf that well. This is a great one. You should see it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A would-be great horror film that suffers the halfway hex
"The Werewolf vs. The Vampire Woman" is one of those movies that had the potential to be really enjoyable, and for about half the movie it is. However this movie unfortunately suffers a "halfway hex" that other movies have also suffered. Here's why I feel this way...

Containing interesting and somewhat mysterious characters, amazing location, dark and enticing atmosphere and a solid plot, "The Werewolf vs. The Vampire Woman" has all the cues to be a great gothic-horror movie. Although it is indeed a low-budget movie, which is apparent in the first five minutes or so, it sets itself out to be one of those guilty-pleasure sort of B-movie gems.

Had this style been kept consistent throughout the whole film, I would have loved it twice as much. Unfortunately, it seems that after about 45 minutes in, things slowly start to become less consistent. The series of events becomes weaker in the second half than in the first half, the characters seem to act more unlike how they originally did, and the ending is one of those endings that leaves you feeling like "What just happened?"

Before I end my review, I just want to remind all readers that I'm not saying this is a terrible movie. If you ever come across it, try to give it a view, because it is for the most part great, at least in its atmosphere and scenery, which to me, can make a movie better. And if you can, get it in time for Halloween! Thanks for the time, and peace.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where Wolf?
This is another Spanish horror film starring Paul Naschy (Jacinto Molina), this time as Waldemar Daninsky, a reclusive author writing a history of gothic churches in northern France and part time werewolf. The film gets down to business in a plot similar to "Manos, the Hands of Fate" when two women researching their thesis on ancient witches stumble upon Naschy's isolated home lost and afraid of impending nightfall. Naschy invites them to stay, and immediately the creepiness begins.

Naschy's crazy sister starts the harassment on the first night, but the coeds agree to hang around. Naschy and the girls find the ancient tomb of the vampire witch and foolishly remove the silver crucifix from her heart, which they fully understand will make her return to life. She certainly does, and when she arises she looks something like Gilda Radner in a nun's habit, only more ridiculous. Unsurprisingly, one of the coeds quickly and predictably becomes a sexy vampire, while Naschy and the remaining girl try to fight her off. Eventually the police arrive, but the policeman is largely ineffective, letting the werewolf and vampire witch fight it out with assistance from the remaining girl with a battle of evil and evil that ends well after an interesting struggle.

I don't care much for the title as it implies that the plot revolves around the battle between the monsters. As I see it, though, the plot is really about good and evil and the ability of love to overcome all (although in this case in a very surprising manner). Naschy is the best actor in the film, though the others are adequate. I thought the dubbing was substantially better than many of the other Spanish horror films from the 1970s, though the music was completely inappropriate and distracting. The werewolf effects and costume were especially wonderful: both creepy and fun at the same time, and I especially liked the introduction to the werewolf in the autopsy scene at the beginning of the film. Naschy really doesn't spend much time on camera as the werewolf, which is a bit disappointing as he is definitely the highlight of the film when in his fanged grandeur.

I liked this film more than most of the genre, and particularly liked the scenes with Naschy as a werewolf. A major detractor is the pacing of the film which is sometimes very plodding, especially after the policeman arrives an hour or so into the film: his conversations with townspeople are boring and prolonged and bring the plot to a halt leaving Naschy and company to resurrect it at the same time he is resurrecting the vampire witch. On balance this is a moody, brooding movie that is worth seeing for any fan of horror.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sound effect rich thriller
Picturing, perhaps, the fifties of the last century France countryside, this film grasped viewer with natural performing by beautiful actors.

Short of modern time technical possibilities, thriller is rich on sound and vision effects significantly contributing to the positive comprehending of traditionally eerie things murder, blood and horror are.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a great movie, but I've seen worse
Okay, it wasn't that good as far as werewolf movies go, but to me the worse part of it was the actors and their accents. I don't mean to disrespect anyone with an accent, but these people sounded like they had Irish accents that were really tough to follow. I couldn't understand more than half of what they were saying. I actually believe it would have done better with subtitles.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst werewolf movie I've ever seen
I thought this one would hold suite to 'An American Werewolf In London", becuz of it's title of course, but it was NO where near AAWIL, or any werewolf movie for that matter. I don't even think it was really a werewolf-It came out in the daylight. Horror-ble!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars El Chupacabra Crosses The Border
A small Texas town begins to experience true terror as first goats are killed and then people. Immediately, people begin thinking of El Chupacabra, the Mexican legend of the Goatsucker that drains goats of their blood. There are several groups we see react to the terror. We have the towns founding family, a group of teens, and some the local Mexicans. There is a lot of anti-Mexican sentiment by some of the characters but the wisest character in the film is a Mexican vet.

Don't expect to see a whole lot of the monster. It is quick and deadly. The best view we get is when a bimbo tries to distract it by flashing her chest. Although the reports say victims bodies are drained, the action shows mangling. This monster film is framed a collection of some of the goofiest characters around. The town's founding family is currently made up of an undertaker and his wife, their daughter, and two almost circus freak relations. They apparently have no standing in town. Most of the rest of the town is no better (get a load of the Sheriff and Deputy). The only exceptions are the Mexicans. Although looked down on by most of the town they are the most normal. So add a monster with some reasonable effects and a Stephen King-style narration to this mix of characters and you get a pretty memorable monster flick. Check it out.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time
I am a horror movies fan, and the ONLY reason I got this piece of trash's DVD is that it's cover had a "Winner of the blah blah award in the blah blah film festival", and usually, movies that win a prize are good to watch, well I hate to say, I wasted my time & my money.
Do NOT WATCH IT, even if you dont have anything else to do, go to sleep or do anything else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tasty title, yet you can not wolf this one down
An over narrated story that must be of the lowest beget.

In the small Texas town of Furlough an unseen (better that way) force is munching on goats. The son of the local vet, Miguel (Gabriel Gutierrez) thinks it is Chewbacca oops I mean Mexican werewolf Chupacabra that is supposed to have a hankering for cabrito. Unfortunately for the local promiscuous teens Chupacabra's dietary repertoire is expanding.

Mean time a father, Mr. Furlough, a pillar of society, has an exotic scheme to curb his daughter's wanton ways and remove the object of her lust who just happened to be Miguel.

Can the town dispatch the Chupacabra?
Will Mr. Furlough dispatch Miguel?
Will Chupacabra get his goat?

This film certainly got mine.

2-0 out of 5 stars exploitation elements
I've seen two or 30 Franco films, but this has Flesh for the Beast / Werewolf Woman / Nightmares Come at Night, I liked Flesh for the Beast, but really disliked Nightmares Come at Night, and Werewolf Woman, so I thought I'd buy some of his titles that have a bigger following.

Well, positive following makes for a fallacious description.

I still need to pick up Exorcism and Venus in Furs.

These titles are kinda Vampyros Lesbos and more slasher genre than anything, fused with all the exploitation elements that make up a typical inadequate Jess Franco film.

Bad collection but you can't go wrong with Hammer and Peter Cushing. ... Read more

Tim Lieder's anthology is an entertaining trip into the Outer Limits of the Twilight Zone. It is a place where a War Against Clowns is violently waged, a magician is taught magic by a scottish crab, a pretty lycanthrope unleashes her wild side in a London club, and a not so imaginary friend helps a shy young man get the girl. Sadly there are no cannibal teddy bears to be found in any of the stories. Maybe in the next anthology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A BIZARRE BUT THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE ANTHOLOGY
I wasn't sure what to make of Teddy Bear Cannibal Massacre when I received it. I mean are these guys serious? Yup, there's a rather angry looking Teddy Bear right on the cover. Yet this horror athnology from Tim Lieder's Dybbuk press turned out to be quite a surprise with 11 stories that hit on a variety of subjects including demented fairy tales, killer clowns, and talking crabs.

C.C. Parker's "Formaldehyde" is a somewhat meandering tale of Bad mushrooms, zombies, and the overpowering smell of formaldehyde. I really loved Paul Haines' "Doof, Doof, Doof" telling a rather demented version of Little Red Riding Hood where the big bad wolf is down on his luck, Red is rather promiscuous, and the three little pigs are foul-mouthed little perverts. What more could you ask for!

"Rats! Wrong Alley" deals with a couple of small-time degenerate drug dealers who have to come up with some money very quickly or find themselves very dead. When they rob a convenience store and hide out in a dilapidated alley, they find that there are worse things than winos living there. Story by Tim Johnson.

Cameron Hill's "Hermetic Crab" is wonderfully imaginative but somewhat out of place as it is more of a straight urban fantasy as opposed to horror. A man finds a crab that talks with a Scottish accent who teaches him the ways of arcane mystical arts for an eventual showdown with the story's villain.

"Something Funny is Going On" by Brian Rosenberger is a great story. It's told in first person through entries in the lead character's war journal and I couldn't get the image of Marvel Comics' The Punisher out of my head while I read it. This lone soldier battles a world that has been infected by alien clowns and he's terminating them with extreme prejudice...and a bit of biting humor to boot.

"Head Drippers" by Robert Steussi might be the single most horrifying tale in the book. A man conducting a journalistic experiment checks himself into a psychiatric hospital to find out just what goes on behind the closed doors and to see if he can actually get back out. He'll soon find he's picked the wrong hospital to check into and "head drippers" becomes quite a literal term.

Other stories are provided by Trina Shealy Orton, William Brock, Roberta Rogaw, Jennifer Jourdanne, and Michael Stone. 144 pages in all and definitely an anthology worth picking up. So when is volume two coming out?

4-0 out of 5 stars No cannibalism, but lots of great stories
Tim Lieder instantly gained my respect for producing the first anthology I've come across in some time that does not include its editor's own fiction between its pages. It's a practice that has become all-too-common these days, and any editors who do it are instantly suspect in my eyes. Essentially, they're just making sure they get a little extra added to their royalty checks. Thank you, Mr. Lieder and Dybbuk Press, for taking the high road, and for producing one of the more consistent modern anthologies.

The first impression that Teddy Bear Cannibal Massacre made on me was through its cover art (by Amanda Rehagen): an obviously pissed-off poseable stuffed bear brandishing what is either a spatula or some sort of medieval fly swatter. This image is surprisingly good at setting the tone for the anthology: the circumventing of my expectations. Nothing was what I thought it would be, most of all the fact that not a one of these "11 stories of fear, obsession, and killer clowns" has a damn thing to do with a teddy bear cannibal massacre, in any sense of the phrase.

Once I got past that, however, I was ready to take on each in Teddy Bear Cannibal Massacre story on its own merits. The first one, "Formaldehyde" by C.C. Parker, however, did not make much of an impression. It took Paul Haines to really get me ready for some entertainment with his "Doof Doof Doof". Its beginning doesn't show much promise, but it folds wonderfully into the rest of this revisionist fairy tale starring Little Red Riding Hood, the Big Bad Wolf, and the Three Little Pigs.

Roberta Rogaw's "Peppercorn Rent" is a more pedestrian kind of tale, but its inclusion of lupine lady, a singer named Lime Green Jello, and an old land rule from the 15th century raises it above the rabble. Sadly, Tim Johnson's "Rats, Wrong Alley" is just one cliche piled on top of the last, all threaded together by stilted dialogue. "Brilliant Suspension" by Trina Shealy Orton has a great beginning -- or, rather, is a great beginning to a story that almost happens, and then doesn't. Conversely, Cameron Hill's "Hermetic Crab" is simply overflowing with imagination -- so much that it doesn't seem to know what to do with it all. When a man finds a magic hermit crab that speaks in a Scottish brogue (don't ask me!), he gets caught up in a fantastic battle of wits and spells. Somehow, this all works together, but it would be even better with a little more focus.

"Blue Elephants" by Jenifer Jourdanne is another type of story entirely. It doesn't belong in a horror anthology like Teddy Bear Cannibal Massacre, and I'm not quite sure it's even a story -- though it has a narrative thread, however thin -- as it seems more like a journal entry. The line between truth and fiction is blurred, in any case, as the author's name is the same as the narrator's. Be that as it may, it is immensely entertaining and Jourdanne's voice is loud and clear. She may have a future as a memoirist alongside Augusten Burroughs, Chuck Klosterman, and Rachel Manija Brown.

"Something Funny is Going On," Brian Rosenberger's offering, effectively showcases the thought processes of a soldier, but in a war against what? Something closer to home than we'd like to think. And I think someone is going to have to explain to me what's going on in Michael Stone's "Clob" before I can make a judgment on it. It has something to do with a talking fish (what's with the anthropomorphic sea creatures?) and the intricacies of romance -- more than that, I can't say.

Beauty and the Beast becomes The Beast and the Beast in William Brock's poetically tragic "Berries Under Snow." But my absolute favorite has to be Robert Steussi's "Head Drippers," where a man doing psychological research comes across abominable experiments. It is like something out of The Twilight Zone and I was surprised when it ended so soon -- this idea could easily be expanded to novel length. Teddy Bear Cannibal Massacre is an auspicious debut for Dybbuk Press. Editor and publisher Tim Lieder obviously has an eye for a good story and, more importantly, he knows when to make a genre exception for the sake of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Admirable Effort from the New Master of the Grotesque
An interesting collection of delightfully disturbing tales, whose twists and turns reflect the multifaceted personality of the editor: a pro-war liberal, a Lutheran-turned-Jew, and an obviously sensitive soul with a strong commitment to the macabre. "Doof, Doof, Doof," for example, is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs, with the lecherous wolf as a grumpy, suicidal main character, complete with a spectacular sex scene starring Little Red Riding Hood and - you guessed it - the three little pigs. "Brilliant Suspension" evokes Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum" - with a mysterious transformation twist at the end. "Blue Elephants," on the other hand, rather than being just scary, offers an interesting commentary on the life of the single person in California. An eclectic anthology of eleven provocative stories, self-produced by what promises to be a rising force in independent sexploitation horror.

5-0 out of 5 stars I edited it.
Teddy Bear Cannibal Massacre is a book of impossible evil, really bad bad evil. If you read it, you'll go insane, vote for Lyndon Larouche, listen to easy listening, and watch the crinkly evil squid eat out your eyeballs. These 11 stories by some of the freshest writers in horror include tales of killer clowns, dancing werewolves, mutant rats, zombies, high schoolers, Disneyland, and other terrible things.

Brilliant Suspension - Torture story
Blue Elephants - Check out Jenifer Jourdanne's livejournal. She's funnier than Sedaris.

5-0 out of 5 stars Won't keep you up at night, but,
For it's time it is a good story about Werewolfs. To get the most you should also see the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
If you have ever seen the movie, then you have to read this novel. The movie pales in comparison to the book. The author is able to depict the dynamics and character of the pack of wolves who are fighting for their very survival. It makes it impossible not to sympathize with the monster (antagonist) of the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars For real
Whitley Streiber's book on the best possible interpretation of the werewolf myth is scary. I say this as one who read it as an adult. I lent it to friend, an engineer with an engineer's imagination (slight) who later confessed the book had made him apprehensive about going into the basement, or an unlighted room.

The closest I'd ever come to fearing the fictional before that was the Beast Things in Andre Norton's "Daybreak 2250 AD", a juvenile scifi.

This is good.

The story is about the accidental discovery that, living in the shadows and parallell to the human race is a race of supercanids. They are bright, fast as hell, and can track you by the scent of yesterday's shadow (said the movie promo).

They have been a factor in human life for millenia. No wonder, says the narrator, that peasants in Europe centuries ago contemplated the night, "their hearts cracking with terror".

But their reality has been gradually dismissed and remains in the civilized world as a myth, dressed up with shapeshifting and eroticism. Perhaps it's easier to live, believing they don't exist?

Part of their diet includes, when in an urban setting, the derelicts and the others nobody will miss. The story starts when a couple of wolfen not entirely trained kill two cops and draw attention to themselves.

Fighting them is tough. They move so fast it's hard to shoot them; they are canny enough to hide perfectly and ambush beautifully.

Their existence explains the lycanthropy stories across the globe.

The plot has to do with a couple of cops trying to convince the authorities that the wolfen exist and, in the tradition of "Enemy of The People" and "Jaws", the authorities don't want to listen. Or, to be more charitable, the authorities don't believe this stupid story. Who would? The wolfen and the two cops are at odds, the wolfen figuring that the cops' existence threatens their secret. They pursue each other, in terrifying detail.

What makes this so terrifying? Together with, for example, "The Exorcist", the author takes great pains to connect it with the real world.

Ambrose Bierce wrote horror stories anthologized in a volume entitled "Can Such Things Be?" The answer, quite clearly, is, "No". "Not a chance." Bierce's failing is his inability to connect his premise to the real world. The willing suspension of disbelief does not stretch to a first line which--I am only making an example here--states, "The slobbering, gibbering monster came out of the heat register!!!"

The reader has to be eased into the horror, step by step. And then it's believable. Bierce's best horror story, and the only one I've seen anthologized outside his own book is "The Damned Thing" and in it, Bierce takes pains to explain, by having his characters discuss the issue, how this could, possibly, be a natural creature and not a fictional creature.

Streiber misses not an opportunity to seamlessly meld the here-and-now with which we are familiar with the fictional world (I think) of the wolfen.

And you will believe. Believe me. You will believe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader
Another supernatural cop story. The Wolfen are not your standard
werewolves, but actually a separate species of highly evolved
humanocanoids, therefore they are highly intelligent. Still hang out in
packs, etc., and are not tool users, but have super canine senses and
speed.

This could easily have been a Witchblade story, touch female cop,
annoying partner - the old crusty variety, not the young clueless
surfer dude type here, though. Shockingly, said partner has a crush on
said good looking woman detective.

The story and style is quite engaging, when a pack of Wolfen mess
up and kill two young cops instead of your usual 'no one will miss this
old homeless guy' meal, it becomes a story of who is hunting who. With
a fast and brutal end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wolfen - a spellbinding read!
This book in simply incredible. It is a well crafted roller coaster ride that takes you into the world and mind of the Wolfen, a highly intelligent wolf mutation that lives in and around our civilization and feeds on our outacsts. I couldn't put it down.

There is a movie based loosly on the book, but the story of the wolfen is totally lost in the movie version. The movie is a horror-thriller on it's own, but it loses the point of the book, the intelligence and cunning of the Wolfen.

If you enjoy a good thriller and a fresh idea and view of our civilization, Wolfen would be a top read for you. I know it is for me.

In my opinion, this is Strieber's finest work.

Wolfen is definitely the oddest and most socially conscious of the three big werewolf movies released in 1981 (the others were The Howling and An American Werewolf in London). Rumpled detective Albert Finney is investigating some brutal NYC murders, which leads him to discover that the collapsing buildings of the South Bronx are home to a pack of very vindictive wolflike creatures. American Indian mythology and environmental issues are more to the point here than silver-bullet lycanthropy. As a police procedural, the movie's a bust, its rhythms wrong and Finney's tortured Brooklyn accent unconvincing. But as a horror-mood piece, it can get under your skin. Some trippy photography, plus a bunch of interesting actors at the beginnings of their film careers (Diane Venora, Gregory Hines, and a lean and hungry Edward James Olmos), outweigh the druggy pace and period hairstyles. Director Michael Wadleigh (Woodstock) never made another feature. --Robert Horton

4-0 out of 5 stars Wolfen
Detective Dewey Wilson is investigating several strange murders in New York City. All the vicitms look as if they have been mutilated by wild animals. His investigation leads him to a group of Native Americans who tell him about the legend of a superior species that once roamed the area, but who are now living and hunting in the slums of New York. This movie is both humorous in a dark way and frightening as well as gory and violent. It puts a spin on the werewolf story because the 'wolfen' aren't werewolfs at all. They're a protective urban species of wolf that dwell in the wreckage of the urban slums because that's where society has pushed them to. The movie never quite goes where you think it is and that makes it fresh and enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you like Great Acting?
Although it is not really a werewolf movie it does contain the spirituality of good werewolf movies. But what raises this movie to a classic level to me, is the acting. Albert Finney, Gregory Hines, and Edward James Olmos are excellent in their roles. One can feel Finney's fear as he watches Olmos' transformation until... needless to say this movie is great on a dark night with a big bowl of popcorn. Just don't watch it alone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some reviewers are too generous.
"They can track you by yesterday's shadow, they can hear a cloud passing overhead."
I saw this when it first came out in theaters and again years later. My opinion of the film did not change much. It was kind of interesting in concept, but had one central problem; Finney was a miscast.
I have enjoyed Albert Finney in some of his other roles, and perhaps his work since Wolfen might be coloring some folks' take on this movie. But he is most certainly in the wrong part here. Which is too bad because I can still remember some of the film, so what's that say??
"Their world is more complete."

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth seeing if you missed it in '81.
This film has a lot of atmospere. It turns a late 70s looking NYC into a gothic slum. If you like the tone of movies like the Shining, Howling, etc, then this one will catch your interest. I won't say it's as good as either of those movies, but there's a familiar late 70s vibe in Wolfen which came out in '81. The cinematography is eerie, high quality and artisic. At nearly 2 hours (114 mins) it's moody meandering drags occasionally. But viewers are rewarded with some splendid shots of the city (from atop the Brooklyn bridge, demolition lots in the Bronx, surreal wolfen POV shots etc.), putting it's erie 'Exorcist'-like spell over a now decades old New York (evidence World Trade Center).

I went into this more excited than I came out of it. It's premise is obviously far-flung and probably worked better in the book (which I didn't read). The Wolfen are creatures that ride that line between Native American symbol and Cujo (a great movie I might add) - which could be one of things that weaken the film. We're not sure how exactly to feel about these carnivores 'ridding the pack of the weak and sick'.

The actors carry the piece well though the main detective is a bit stodgy which helps slow the pace, but overall the acting fits and helps create the mood. As the plot really unfolds however, things got a little less intriguing for me, although I'll give 'em this much - they did a lot with the semi-wacky idea they were running on. I guess that's the supernatural for you. I'm happy I saw it. Halfway through the picture I'd have given it 5 stars. By the end I was down to 4 as it didn't reach the excitement level, or cleverness, of classics like The Shining or Exorcist. I wouldn't watch it again, but I'm happy to have seen it once. It certainly deserves that much, and sorry to hear the director never did another picture. He obviously had talent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, not what you might be expecting.
For an early 80's horror film this is not bad, not bad at all. sure the special effects are a bit pathetic and the dialogue is a tad cliché, but the film does induce a level of fear and paranoia found in any good horror film. Released in 1981 in the middle of the early 80s horror boom, Wolfen was released in the same year as the other two big werewolf pictures An American Werewolf In London and The Howling, and was regarded as the weakest film in the werewolf genre but that isn't really accurate or fair. For a start it's not about werewolves, the wolfen of the title are something else entirely and while John Landis and Joe Dante both took a more light hearted approach, Wolfen is an ambitious and more serious film. Wolfen was also directed by Michael Wadleigh who made the acclaimed concert documentary Woodstock, it seems to be about monsters as nature's payback for man's environmental irresponsibility so it has a strong environmental message. It also touches on the mistreatment of American Indians.

Wolfen opens in a derelict section of the South Bronx where a billionaire head of a big corporation is taking part in a ground-breaking ceremony for an urban renewal project. The billionaire grins for the cameras and the press, and all the while some other eyes with cool heat-vision effects are watching him too. That night the billionaire, his coke-sniffing wife and their bodyguard stop around a Park when they're slaughtered by an unseen attacker. The next morning the police chief calls in retired detective Dewey Wilson (Albert Finney) to investigate. Suspecting terrorism, Dewey first teams up with terrorism expert Rebecca Neff (Diane Venora); but the case soon takes a different turn when coroner's assistant Whittington (Gregory Hines) figures out that the wounds don't look like they were caused by anything human.

A fascinating and atmospheric tale, effectively set in the dark alleys of New York, its only major flaw is it's length. It's only in the last half hour that we discover the true nature and purpose of the wolfen and this being a 114 minute film, the build-up feels dragged out. Also the film-makers serious intentions don't always work with the obligatory monster attacks, but there were some nice gore scenes including a few decapitations. It also helps that the director is not saddled with the silly-looking rubber monsters of other similar film. Wadleigh's wolves are mostly real animals, well trained and effectively directed. Although Wolfen's not very well-known, having been a box office flop in the summer of 1981, it appears to have influenced other films. The shots from the wolves' perspectives have a very similar look to the alien's viewpoint in 1987's Predator, using bright primal colours and heightened sounds to suggest the creatures more advanced senses. And James Horner's music sounds similar his famous score for Aliens which he wrote five years later especially in the suspense sequences. This was definitely an interesting and very good film worth seeing if you enjoy thoughtful horror movies and don't mind a bit of gore. There are no extras to speak of but the widescreen picture is impressive. Sadly the package is let down a little by a weak, slightly out of sync soundtrack.

A graduate of Roger Corman's school of low-budget ingenuity, Joe Dante gained enough momentum with 1978's Piranha to rise to the challenge of The Howling, and he brought along Piranha screenwriter John Sayles to cowrite this instant werewolf classic. Makeup wizard Rob Bottin was recruited to create what was then the wildest onscreen transformation ever seen. With Gary Brandner's novel The Howling as a starting point, Sayles and Dante conceived a werewolf colony on the California coast, posing as a self-help haven led by a seemingly benevolent doctor (Patrick Macnee), and populated by a variety of "patients," from sexy, leather-clad sirens (among them Elisabeth Brooks) to an old coot (John Carradine) who's quite literally long in the tooth. When a TV reporter (Dee Wallace) arrives at the colony to recover from a recent trauma, the resident lycanthropes prepare for a howlin' good time.

Dante handles it all with equal measures of humor, sex, gore, and horror, pulling out all the stops when the ravenous Eddie (Dante favorite Robert Picardo, later known as the Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager) transforms into a towering, bloodthirsty werewolf. (Bottin's mentor Rick Baker would soon raise the makeup ante with An American Werewolf in London.) As usual, in-jokes abound, from characters named after werewolf-movie directors, amusing cameos (Corman, Sayles, Forrest J. Ackerman), and hammy inserts of wolfish cartoons and Allen Ginsberg's "Howl." It's best appreciated now as a quintessential example of early-'80s horror, with low-budget limitations evident throughout, but The Howling remains a giddy genre milestone. --Jeff Shannon

5-0 out of 5 stars The Howling
Great werewolf movie, Its a classic. Its a blast from the 80's, but with gore that was serpast its time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Howling
After taking part in a risky police operation intended to trap a serial murderer, Karen White witnesses something horrifying enough to trigger selective amnesia. Consumed by a series of violent nightmares, she decides to admit herself to a recovery center, but the other occupants may not be what they seem. The Howling is a good werewolf movie with some incredible special effects. A great horror movie to watch at night with all the lights off, if you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best along with American Werewolf from a great decade
This movie along with "American" has the best special FX from a decade where people has to use the inteligence to creat great sequences without the presence of CGI, that's what make them the best of the market and its story telling of course... and It's a shame that at this time there isn't a bluray version, don't know what are they waiting.

Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Most boring horror movie ever
Sorry, I just don't get the rave reviews for The Howling. Terrible acting, stupid and boring storyline where absolutely nothing happens for the first two thirds of the movie, and ridiculous looking werewolves.

Thank God I only paid $2 for this on special - it's one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Ended up fast forwarding thru most of the middle of the movie, just to get to the ending. Blaaaah.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Original & Still The Best
THE HOWLING is the best werewolf flick I've ever seen in my lifetime and both Dee Wallace and Elizabeth Brooks do an awesome performance, especially when kids see Dee Wallace transforming into a werewolf on the news at the end of the movie and when Elizabeth Brooks & Christopher Stone are deliciously nasty doing werewolf sex showing Liz Brooks in full frontal nudity coochie, tatas, and all, which definelty made Liz Brooks eyecandy.

The one thing I found baffling and gross about this movie was when Liz Brooks is in the cafe and the waiter asks her how does she want her hamburger and Liz Brooks says "Rare".

This horror flick also takes me all the way back to memory lane to when we had all those budget cuts going on during the recession we had going on back in 1981-1982 when Ronald Regan was president since I was 9 years old in the 3rd grade at Rockwood Elementry School in Calexico, CA and living in my hometown(El Centro, CA)at the time THE HOWLING was released in all the movie theatres, which was during my childhood days of living in the Imperial Valley.

Overall, I would have to say that this was the best Howling of them all, since I didn't care for all the other Howling sequels. ... Read more

I've certainly read better. Only finished it to see if it got any better. It didn't.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book Rocks
This book ROCKS. If you enjoy shape shifters and romance, and action and love, and distaste, and rebellion, and survival, you'll love this book! Jennifer was able to give us the heart and soul of her characters and leave you begging for more. But do you want to know the good news? She has sequels. So I am off to find out what the deal is with the secondary story lines in this book and to drool over some rather smokin' hot Shadowmen! Jennifer, keep up the great work, and thanks for a riveting read that almost literally smoked in my hands as I flipped through the pages!

Wow. I picked this one up cold, having no expectations whatsoever. Okay, that's not true. There's a half-nekkid man on the cover and a wolf in the background--that along with the title made me think "werewolf romance"--just a wild guess.

In fact, that's one of my few quibbles with this story--it's a bit of false advertising. Yes, the hero does shapeshift, but that's not the main point of the story. Or rather, it's not your typical werewolf story, which is what I was expecting.

Instead, it's more comparable to Angela Knight's Mageverse. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Erin Morgan is confused, frightened, and on the run after discovering that the doctor she worked for, who she thought was working on an innovative cancer cure, is actually a murderer. Then her car is hit by a creature that's subsequently attacked and driven off by a wolf. She crashes, passes out, and when she wakes up, there's a naked man on the hood of her car.

Jared is the Shadowman who, in wolf form, protected her from the Tsara that attacked her. Unfortunately, in defending her, he was bit himself, and the poison from the Tsara's bite will spread until he becomes Tsara himself, dependent on the blood of humans, especially a particular kind of human--the Elan, like Erin.

Erin's torn between two goals: help Jared, who's injured and apparently feverish, and expose Dr. Cinatas. Jared's goal is to protect Erin, not only from the Tsara, but from himself and what he's becoming. Unfortunately, touching Erin is the only thing that eases his pain, even while his desire for her blood grows stronger.

Which brings me to my second quibble, and only major one: I got confused. Which is no doubt evident in my attempt to summarize. To be fair, I probably shouldn't have read this when I did--I was exhausted. The night after I finished it, I slept 11 hours straight. So a re-read would probably make it much clearer. Still, I loved it anyway, so that's saying something.

This is an exciting, action-packed story in an intriguing contemporary fantasy world, but what really makes it stand out for me are the characters. Erin's character rang very true to me--she was neither too good to be true nor too stupid to live; neither was she too credulous or too doubting. She was determined, but she was also scared. The force keeping them apart--Jared's fears that he was a danger to her--was likewise believable. While in his POV, I could feel his conflict and desperation.

There were several secondary characters I'd like to see more of; not to mention that I'd like to spend more time in this world. I hope this is just the first of a long series. In the meantime, I'll be looking for Jennifer St. Giles's backlist.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Hell is about to break loose
The evil minions of Heldon are about to wreak havoc in the mortal world and only the Guardian Forces of Logos stand in their way. But Erin Morgan knows nothing about this as she travels the foggy roads of Tennessee on a search to find information about why there are 4 dead bodies in the medical clinic where she works as a nurse. There are clues to this approaching war, the first of which lands on the hood of her SUV. What exactly is this black creature and did the blue-eyed silver wolf fighting with it really tell her to LEAVE NOW? After running off of the road, she discovers a naked man on the hood of her car, Jared the Blood Hunter. This is Erin's introduction to the Shadowmen, the shape-shifting elite fighting force of Logos, sworn to protect human life. At first, she is unwilling to believe what Jared tells her, but evidence of the truth rapidly begins to appear. Jared is in a race against time as his poisonous wound slowly corrupts him into one of the Damned and he is hunted by his brother Blood Hunters as they attempt to save his soul. There is something about Jared that fascinates and excites Erin. Can her burgeoning love for him, and the allies they discover in the town of Twilight, stem the approaching darkness from stealing Jared's soul before claiming him as a powerful force for evil? Can their combined power slow the approaching conflict between the spirit warriors of Logos and the evil power of Heldon?

"Touch a Dark Wolf" is the first novel in Jennifer St. Giles new paranormal romance series, "The Shadowmen". Set in the present day, with a backdrop of current world problems, St. Giles' supernatural heroes battle against the evil threatening to take over the world. Her characters are compelling, unique individuals. The story is fast paced and pulls the reader along with her protagonists to a satisfying conclusion. Although not a typical "gothic" romance, this book contains many of the same elements, and the paranormal twist definitely adds spice to the mix. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you have nothing else to read . . .
Was hoping for a good absorbing tale to occupy my time during a commute. Instead I found myself wondering where the other precursor books to the series were since I had obviously missed them. Many unexplained references to things that had occurred in the past, one dimensional characters that behave erratically, insane and stupid one minute, brave and heroic the next. Not much rhyme or reason to it. Since there was nothing else to read I did finish it but if there had been anything else I would not have finished reading it. As I have not read any of her prior books, I was not predisposed to love it in any way. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Big yawn
This book was BORING, with a very uninteresting plot and dull characters. So my advice is don't waste your money like I did. I love paranormal and sci-fi romance books, so I was really disappointed with this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable book
Good book for those looking for another werewolf romance. Has a new twist and is very interesting to read. Unfortunately, kinda pricey. Thank goodness I get amazon certificates to feed my book obesssion or I wouldn't be able to try some of these books that a little out of the mainstream. She is a very solid writer and I hope she will be able to cross-over to mass market paperbacks. Her books aren't too steamy (for those who like their paranormals HOT) but have good character development.

5-0 out of 5 stars Werewolves & love & laughter - it has it all!

5-0 out of 5 stars vegas bites
Anyone who loves a good story will love this book. I got it because i know L.A. Banks is a good author, what i got was much more. I did not know what to expect but i wasnt dissaapointed. I love the way all the authors tie the stories together. Once you read the first one and go into the second, u wont be lost or trying to gain understanding about the story. I loved that the basic back story tied everything together and made for a real good read.

3-0 out of 5 stars I liked it ...
I liked this book, but have read more compelling werewolf stories. The storyline of a family of werewolves seems fun and different, it's sad that none of the authors seemed to have taken any of their storylines to a full-length book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A exciting rollercoaster ride....until the end.....
As a huge LA Banks fan, she did not disappointment me in the opening story; the life and dynamics of a were clan was as exciting as her incredible vampire huntress series, JM Jeffries, Seressia Glass did a fabulous job of seamlessly tying in the characters and nuances established with the first novella. While intrigued with Natalie Dunbar's novella, I was felt cheated with the outcome as several questions that were relevant to the who, what and why questions about its main character were never answered. I don't expect all stories to be neatly finished like a gift, but I felt there was a major disconnect to the climax and rushed ending.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good one
Exciting!

could not put it down; love the werewolf material. love the stories; more good authors.

well worth a purchase

5-0 out of 5 stars Vegas Bites
Welcome to the French Quarter Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, where werewolves, vampires, and humans drink, gamble and have a merry good time.

Heat by L.A. Banks

Werewolf Butch Maverick works for the Preternatural Authorities and his latest assignment is to hunt down the robberies that have been causing major wolf-style mayhem throughout the Midwest, before the humans decide to take matters into their own hands. Butch ends up the one place that he thought he would never return to - the French Quarter Hotel and where his old flame, Laurel, heads the Security Operations. To make matters worse, with the full moon just days away it is very difficult for Butch to concentrate on his job at hand with Laurel in full-blown heat!

With a title like Heat you can bet your bottom dollar that you are in store for some mega-hot, mind-blowing sex! Readers, I am glad to say that L.A. Banks did not disappoint in that department. Man oh man! As the investigation heats up, so does the relationship between Butch and Laurel. My mind was constantly clouded with massive desire and thrilling suspense. As a couple, and independently, Butch and Laurel are very headstrong, alpha-type characters that showcase enormous raw passion and great stamina. Ms. Banks did a wonderful job of binding a fascinating, action-packed, zealous, heart-pounding story that will instantly capture your interest within seconds of its beginning.

The Hunger Within by J.M. Jeffries

After many years of being under the care of a powerful Temple werewolf clan, Solange Warwick has decided to leave the clan's casino and branch out on her own. This was a very difficult decision for Solange; she knows that it is one that must be made because of her past. However, before she can break her ties to the clan, Solange is pulled into a dangerous undercover sting operation with the drop-dead gorgeous casino bouncer, Jarred Maitland.

Jarred Maitland is an undercover FBI agent. His current mission is to bring down the notorious Kenny Brooks. For the past fifteen years, the FBI has known that Brooks was behind at least half a dozen casino robberies; however, they had no proof and it was up to Jarred to infiltrate Brook's gang before the next big robbery.

Readers, you are about to take one red-hot journey with The Hunger Within by J.M. Jeffries. This storyline has a perfect mix of suspense, sex and adventure that is sure to get your juices flowing. From the get go, the chemistry between Solange and Jarred is smoking hot and passionate. As the story progress, the attraction between the couple becomes more pronounced and the danger that threatens them intensifies to a molting hot boiling point. There were moments where my heart was racing from the thrilling adventure and times where I was overflowing with great desire from Solange and Jarred sexual relations. This is a great story that I'm sure readers who love spicy romance and gripping suspense will find it quite enjoyable.

Double Down by Seressia Glass

With her parents about to retire from running the French Quarter Hotel and Casino, everyone is eagerly waiting to see if Simone Temple and her brother are able to handle taking over their parents' rule and keeping the hotel afloat. Simone's main task is to secure a contract with Kadim, the Great Magician, but Kadim isn't cooperating. Not about to accept his agent's refusal, Simone is determined to change Kadim's mind by any means necessary, even if it means hunting him down and meeting him face-to-face in his mysterious private domain. Upon her arrival, Simone gains more than she bargains for as she discovers that Kadim has many shocking secrets. And, if that isn't enough, a menace from Kadim's past is seeking vengeance.

Double Down is a sexy thriller that is sure to rapidly increase your body temperature. Simone is a feisty character who's intent on making Kadim see things her way, while Kadim's only goal is to prove to Simone that they belong together. As these two fascinating characters are brought together, the sparks fly and the danger escalates. Seressia Glass has crafted a lot of exhilarating suspense and spine-tingling passion within that had me totally captivated from the start to finish. The plot was tight and the couple's chemistry is wickedly lustful. Secrets and danger blend together in a completly satisfying mix in Ms. Glass's compelling tale, Double Down.

Out of the Dark by Natalie Dunbar

Kellie Monroe was only in Las Vegas to bury her beloved grandmother; however, before she could make the funeral arrangements, Kellie is shocked beyond belief when a pack of rogue werewolves steal her grandmother's body and are hunting her, seeking a valuable medallion that her grandmother left in her possession. After Kellie is violently attacked and left for dead by the band of werewolves, she awakes in the hospital to find a handsome member of the Preternatural Police Force by the name of Garen Roy in her room filled with questions and demanding that once she is released she is to remain under his protection until the bandits are caught.

Intense danger, thrilling suspense and scrumptious bed play make Out of the Dark a first-rate, exciting read. From the jump-start, Natalie Dunbar successfully intrigued me with an electrifying opening that had me firmly griping my seat as I eagerly turned page after page to discover how the story would unfold. Kellie and Garen are the perfect couple; they complimented each other very well both in and out of bed and they also showcased impulsiveness, strong-willed, determination. Readers, you are in a sweet, spicy treat with this one. This is one sexually charged, action-packed novella that is bound to leave you breathless with desire all while fulfilling your suspenseful craving.

Now you have it! Four superb, explosive werewolf tales that are sure to cause a sizzling frisson reaction. Each story was different; yet, the same as they all revolved around dangerous situations within the French Quarter Hotel and Casino. There was never one lackluster moment as all the four stories were very well written, highly entertaining and contained enough spice to satisfy any need. Run don't walk to purchase Vegas Bites, it's a fantastic anthology!

My Immortal Knight - Uncovering Navarro By Delilah Devlin Book 5 in the My Immortal Knight series. Sidney Coffey, Seattle's "News at Nine" girl, uncovers the scoop of a lifetime and her ticket into serious journalism. The only problem is without proof, no one's going to believe the victims of recent gang killings are in fact undead and vampires! With her gut telling her there's an even bigger story lurking beneath the surface, she decides to beard a reclusive vampire master in his den for an interview. But meeting the master only complicates things. For a woman with a voracious sexual appetite, the tall, dark and gloomy vamp proves an irresistible challenge. When a reporter trespasses on his estate, Navarro is at first amused, then annoyed that the little baggage is close to putting together the pieces of a dangerous plot involving an old enemy and a group of murdered geneticists. To keep her safe, Navarro issues an erotic invitation he won't let her refuse. My Immortal Knight - Silver Bullet By Delilah Devlin Book 6 in the My Immortal Knight series. As the new sheriff on Dark Mountain, Alec Weir walks a fine line between upholding werewolf clan laws and saving his vampire-loving brother from certain death. To save Max, he must find the traitor in the clan responsible for the death of a member of Max's super-secret police unit, which aligned with the southern vampire council. Complicating things further, his chosen mate, Stasia McGwyre, still holds a candle for Max. Stasia can't resist tweaking Alec's tail each time she gets near him. After being dumped by Max, she's sure the only thing Alec is after anyway is a wild ride in the hay and a little familial one-upmanship. When Alec's frustration with her bad-ass attitude leads to a rougher brand of sex, Stasia and Alec are both shocked to realize there's a deep animalistic streak running through them both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot romance
As in all of Delilah Devlin books I loved this one. The hero was hot and sexy. All her Immortal Knight books make you want what they have. I wanted to walk down the street and see this hunk coming toward me with all this long blonde hair.. makes you say yum.. When you start this book or any of the Immortal books you want to finish then now not put them down till you see what happens. And wow does things happen. She writes all her books like she is there with them. Very good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious
If you could get past the picture on the cover (very Fabio-esque for my taste) you really have a delicious read on your hands. I think this is probably my fav in the My Immortal series. It has just the right amount of kink that Ms. Devlin has gotten us so accustomed to. The story line is great as well. I loved reading this book. I can't wait till the next installment comes out. The cliffhanger at the end has my mind wondering. Quentin and Darcy were my favorite coupling in the entire series. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Repetition...repetition.....repetition
Silhouette and Harlequin books can be good for a quick read and I was looking forward to The Empath based on the other reviews. That said, I finished the book but it could have been better. So much better.

Others have given you their reasons why they liked this book. Let me tell you why I didn't care for it. The first reason was because of Nicolas-the-Man-Tease. Supposedly Maggie-the-Empath doesn't know her history. She was raised by foster parents and had blacked out the past prior to living with humans. She thinks she is human, too. Add to that, she is a virgin. Here comes Nicolas who believes in control, control, control. He starts something with her, she lets down her inhibitions and then, "No. Not now." This goes on for awhile. Come on.

Then there is the continual explaining of the Morphs, and what evil they can do. Once, yes....twice, OK.....three times, boring. I am going to give Maggie credit since she had the intellect to become a veterinarian that she doesn't need the constant explanations. But Ms. Vanak plays her differently. She is in constant denial and Nicolas repeats himself on these issues numerous times throughout the story.

Also, Maggie knows she can heal animals sometimes yet she doesn't want to believe she is the Empath- a healer. Again, come on. I love a good paranormal book but I don't like it when the characters are written to play stupid. I know, I know, I shouldn't expect so much from a Silhouette but if I pay for a book I want it to at least be interesting. This book just didn't do it for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read!
This is my first book of Bonnie Vanak's, but it won't be my last! The Empath was even better than I expected after reading the back blurb. It's been in my TBR pile and now I just wish I'd picked it up sooner! Maggie and Nicholas are a hot, engaging couple that you just want to see triumph over everything. Maggie was so sweet, literally unable to kill a fly in the beginning, I fell in love with her from the start! I think one of the reviewers said this was Ms. Vanak's first book w/ Nocturne, and if it is, I hope it isn't her last!!
[....]

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Darkness
It was compelling you had to keep reading until the end. Its characters are amazing, the plot kept me wondering what was going to happen. Its a must read book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotionally charged tale....
Step inside a new world, where werewolves and magic collide....

Nicholas Keenan has a duty to his pack, the same pack from which he is considered an outcast. As a Draicon werewolf warrior, Nicholas is charged with finding the pack's lost empathy and bringing her home. After all, only can THE EMPATH defeat the menace to the Draicon, the deadly Morphs (shape shifters) who have infected the pack leader, Damian. However, THE EMPATH is veterinarian Maggie Sinclair, a woman who has sworn to not kill a single living soul. In fact, Maggie doesn't even realize she is a Draicon! How will these two very different individuals handle the love that grows between them? Will Maggie's return defeat the Morphs? And just what other secrets will be uncovered?

What a powerful tale! Bonnie Vanak delivers an emotionally charged tale that has the perfect balance of plot and passion. Her writing is exquisite as the deep emotional turmoil of the characters simmers throughout this fascinating werewolf story. I could feel Maggie's anguish at being forced into inflicting violence while Nicholas' loneliness was piercing in its intensity.

The Morphs provided an interesting twist to the storyline. Their powers gave me the shivers as the image of the ants is one that will haunt my nightmares for quite awhile! However, the Morphs are not the only twist in this story as Bonnie Vanak has some surprises in store for her readers. A sequel is obviously intended as there are a few loose threads that I cannot wait to see resolved.

THE EMPATH is a sensuous and heartbreakingly beautiful tale that is sure to be loved by paranormal readers. Bonnie Vanak takes the werewolf legends and shapes them into her own stunning mythology. Bravo, Ms. Vanak, and keep the stories coming!

COURTESY OF CK2S KWIPS AND KRITIQUES

5-0 out of 5 stars fun paranormal romantic suspense fantasy
The Morphs and the Draicon detest one another as they differ when it comes to the third sentient species on the planet. The Morphs are shapeshifters who believe humans are beneath them on the food chain whereas the Draicon werewolves believe all life is sacred.

Draicon werewolf Nicolas Keenan learns that the Morphs threaten his soulmate, a Draicon veterinarian Dr. Maggie Sinclair, who thinks she is human. He races to Florida to keep her safe, but she rejects him as being a lunatic. Her belief systems changes when the evil shapeshifting Morphs attack her and Nicolas saves her life. As she realizes who she is and who he is to her, they team up in love to fight for their lives.

The key to this paranormal romantic suspense fantasy is the belief that the Draicon and Morph are genuine species who are in a shapeshifters' civil war. Nicolas and Maggie are interesting lead characters whose relationship morphs (a bad action verb for this couple) from her assuming he is crazy to joining him in love and safety. Fans will appreciate Bonnie Vanak's engaging thriller as her world is a dangerous place to live let alone fall in love.

Unleashed By Cathryn Fox The last thing Paranormal Task Force Agent Jace Garrett wants is to be teamed up with psychic Skylar Bray on a hunt for a murderous werewolf. It's not that he doesn't believe in her psychic abilities or her skills, he's worried that she will sense the secret he's been hiding for years that the blood of a werewolf runs through his veins. To Skylar, the only good werewolf was a dead werewolf. Years ago, her family was slaughtered by a murderous pack, and Skylar has vowed revenge on all the brutal creatures. Forced to go undercover at an erotic adults-only resort with handsome Agent Jace Garrett, Skylar quickly finds her desire spiraling out of control. Skylar and Jace discover a physical and emotional connection in the sensual atmosphere of the resort, but time is running out. The killer has set his sights on Skylar...and the full moon is on the rise. Lion In the Shadows By Delilah Devlin When a teen dies inside an unexplored cave, it's Lani Kimmel's job to bring him out. This is not a pleasant job, but one she can handle as a member of the local fire department and an expert in cave rescues. But the trek into the cave awakens a creature that will push this no-nonsense woman's boundaries of belief and test her newly emerging love for one man. Rafe Chavez, the new sheriff in this small Texas town, has already staked a claim on Lani. He's a man with a goal in his sights, and he's not letting anything get in his way until he dreams about an Indian brave who died in that unexplored cave, savaged by a mountain lion. When his dreams cross into reality, Rafe realizes he may be possessed by the Indian's spirit but the spirit isn't alone and it wants Lani. Just when Lani's resistance to his erotic persuasion crumbles, Rafe must push her away to protect her from another creature that has also cast its gaze upon her.

4-0 out of 5 stars Story #1 Jace and Skylar; Story #2 Rafe and Lani
Unleashed by Cathryn Fox:

Jace is a special agent working for a paranormal investigative group and he is on the hunt for a murdering werewolf. When his captain orders Jace to work with the beautiful psychic, Skylar, Jace is not pleased. The last thing he needs is a psychic figuring out the secret he has kept hidden for over 30 years...he is half werewolf, that's why he is so good at tracking other werewolves.
Skylar has one purpose, to make sure all werewolves are caught. Her parents were brutally murdered by werewolves and she has used her psychic powers since then to help in any way she can to eradicate the creatures.
As Jace and Skylar work undercover together they are sent to a pleasure resort, where sexual fantasies are realized and played out, to locate the elusive werewolf (Lucas) and then catch him in the act of murder when the full moon comes. As Jace and Skylar keep dibs on Lucas the sexual allure of the resort calls to their innermost desires. It doesn't take either of them long to realize they want more than just sex, they want love. But Jace is afraid to get involved, he fears the full moon and what might happen to his loved ones when he changes. Skylar does not believe that any man can accept her psychic abilities, so she tends to distance herself from men before they do the same to her.
Can Jace keep the fact that he is a werewolf hidden from Skylar, even during the sexual encounters when the beast within him threatens to reveal itself? What will happen when Skylar's psychic abilities reveal another werewolf in their midst? Or will the allure of the moon destroy what they long for?

This story was short but intense with a decent story line built in. The story takes place at a pleasure resort so expect a little bit of voyeurism involved, just enough to keep the pages sizzling. The characters ultimately stayed true to each other. I would give this story 4 stars.

Lion in the Shadows by Delilah Devlin:

Lani works with the volunteer fire department as a cave rescuer and Rafe is the new sheriff in town. Lani recently broke off her relationship with Rafe and he is not pleased. Lani does not want to fall in love. After seeing the way her father abused her mother she doesn't want to become involved with a man because of the fear that he will turn abusive.
When a boy is killed in a nearby cave Lani and Rafe encounter each other again after almost a month of complete seperation. Lani, while trying to keep an emotional distance, continues with her job but when she is lowered into the cave she sees the unbelievable. In what was once a completely closed cavern (until a recent explosion caused the opening) she spots a lion beside the dead boys body. She immediately leaves the cave and allows Rafe to comfort her as she explains what she saw. When a team goes back into the cave the boys body is still there but the lion has vanished. After comforting Lani, Rafe follows her to her house and an intensely hot episode takes place in her living room. Then strange things start to happen. The lion shows up at Lani's house several times and suddenly Rafe is dreaming he is the lion. In his dreams he learns the spirit of the lion and an indian warrior merged years ago, and the warrior wants Lani for his own. When Rafe tries to protect Lani the indian's spirit enters his body and the fight for dominance with Rafe begins. How will Lani react when she finds out Rafe is being possessed? Will Rafe be able to keep the indian in his spirit from touching the woman he has come to love? Or will the indian dominate the body he has encountered?

This story was not what I expected but it was intriguing, I was expecting a werewolf story. There was a lot of twists and turns to this short story that kept the pages turning and the lust between Lani and Rafe was intense. I would give this story 4 stars.

****Both stories were interesting but I found that the erotica became too much. I like a good erotic romance but these stories would become way too graphic, the language especially would get a little out of hand (I like some good dirty talking but too much just ruins the moment), in some instances but luckily the stories did not focus too much on that so it did not alter my overall rating too much. I would recommend this book for erotica fans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brooding Werewolf Loves a Crippled Socialite
"To Catch a Wolf" is both the first Krinard book and first werewolf book I've ever read - and I quite enjoyed it. The writing was crisp and elegant, and the story itself had interesting characters and a creative setting. I also understand it is part of a series, of which I am sure to read.

Set in Colorado in the late 1800s, "To Catch" revolves around two love triangles. The first includes ex-convict Morgan Holt (a werewolf who wants nothing to do with humans), crippled socialite Athena (a repressed werewolf), and snake charmer Tamar (a voluptuous circus freak with reptile skin). The second love triangle includes ruthless businessman Niall (Athena's human half-brother), horse tamer Caitlin (a pixy of a circus performer), and social climber Cecily (scheming her way up through false friendship).

The heroes are Morgan and Athena, who struggle to accept their love for one another. Their challenges are more mental in nature: Morgan was imprisoned for a crime he cannot forget while Athena is not only crippled in body, but also in spirit, and doesn't even realize it. This is a story about how love heals all types of wounds.

I thoroughly enjoyed Morgan. Krinard's descriptions of him, as either man or wolf, were beautifully sad, savage, and majestic. As for the heroine - at first, I was annoyed with Athena and all her self-serving charities, but as her inner wolf began to show, I began to soften toward her. I couldn't wait for them to finally come together.

Although I really enjoyed this book, there were a couple things that bothered me. For one, while Krinard writes elegantly and rather creatively, she also tended to overwrite, resulting in some scenes and dialogue that dragged a bit. She also "overwrote" a couple characters, too, especially Niall, who started off as a great anti-hero, but ended up a crazy jerk (though I think we're supposed to like him; after all, Caitlin did). Another major problem I had was with Morgan's secret. When it was finally revealed, I did not think his crime was worth all the guilt and unhappiness heaped upon him.

However, I was pleased to see that these werewolves were not the ugly, murderous monsters you see in the movies. Most of the time, as werewolves, Morgan and Athena wander around in wolf form, doing wolf things, like running with the pack, mating for life, etc. Very romantic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Story
I love werewolf novels. This was a very good story. I enjoyed the various characters. Athena was crippled at an early age. Her family is very powerful. She lives with her brother and her life has been very sheltered as a society hostess. Morgan Holt is a werewolf who was convicted for the killing of his father. Once he left prison he deserted mankind and traveled with the wolves. One day he is badly hurt and changes into a man and collapses in front of a circus. The circus people, meeting another "outcast", take Morgan in. Morgan decides to stay with the circus because he owes it to them, and they need his help to earn enough money to support them through the winter. Athena's brother just happens to meet the circus, and then Athena meets Morgan. This story is pretty much about Morgan and Athena's growing relationship and how she will have to learn how to let her fear go, and Morgan will have to learn how to love and trust again. Very good story.

4-0 out of 5 stars An author who pleases...
Morgan Holt is a dangerous man. Even if he were not a convicted killer, that would be true. He is a werewolf, but does not really fit in either the world of men or wolves. He has, however, managed to find a temporary home in a traveling circus. He is not the kind of man you would expect to be charitable, at first glance.

Yet, it is charity that will bring him to his destiny. When the troupe journeys to Denver to perform for a charitable event, Morgan comes face to face with a woman who will change his life. Athena Munroe appears frail and weak, bound to a wheelchair. He knows there is more to her than that; she is another of his kind, meant to run free.

Society demands that they deny who and what they are. It's dangerous, and exciting. Choices will be demanded by love that will either destroy the two or give them life.

**** You will see why Susan Krinard is considered the best werewolf writer of the day. She draws characters who bridge classes for love and defy the odds. Historically, her scenes are realistic and her players dynamic. You will never go wrong reading one of her books. ****

Reviewed by Amanda Killgore.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing - Spoiler
I was very disappointed with this novel. I loved Susan Krinard's Once A Wolf and Secret Of The Wolf so I was looking forward to this book. It was too "preachy" for lack of a better word. I lost whatever respect I had for Athena after she repeatedly failed to realize how much danger she was in from her brother. Morgan let her brother shoot him rather than defend himself and risk her anger. I don't know what the hell Krinard was thinking. The sanctity of life stops when the other person is trying to murder you or blackmail you into being basically enslaved.

3-0 out of 5 stars It was okay
The book was interesting and could definitely stand on its own (away from the other in the series). I just wished that there was a connection back to the other stories. The series is written because the characters are connected in some way. I wanted to see some sort of connection made besides a name. ... Read more

Keri Arthur is a wonderful author. I started reading her books a couple of years ago. Starting with Riley Jensen and tresgressing back to others. So now, Nikki and Michael are my second choice. I can't put any of the Nikki and Michael books down. I get so wrapped up with the characters that my husband gets jealous. Keri has a way of writing that you feel you are actually watching the scenes play out in your mind. It is wonderful. Makes me feel like a child again, playing imaginary games inside and out doors. Thank you Keri for your wonderful works of art!

Product Description

Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.

Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.

Minny, Aibileen’s best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody’s business, but she can’t mind her tongue, so she’s lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.

Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don’t.

5-0 out of 5 stars loved it!
I loved this book and found it impossible to put down . Such real people with raw emotion . Sad to see it end. It really opened my eyes to a world I didnt know anything about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Read in a Long Time!
This was one I could not put down but didn't want it to end. It was beautifully written. I highly recommend this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Help
I thought the book was written very well. It had excellent character development and the story line was well thought out. This book reminded me of Same Kind of Different as Me and quite a few of other popular books and movies that have recently appeared on race relations in the South.

4-0 out of 5 stars Crisp insight into a significant period in our nation's maturation

I purchased this book for my wife (she requested it). She thoroughly enjoyed the well-written account of a period with which we were only generally familiar (having lived in the west). The personalization of the characters provides a particularly meaningful perspective of a time and place in our nation's history where we as citizens and the nation as an institution make an effort toward real maturity, as to its entirety of populous while recognizing the injustice that remained a culturally embedded impediment to genuine civility.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
The Apothecary's Daughter is a brilliant book because from the very beginning it just sucked me in. I could never put my kindle down while reading this and I never even read my other books! This book had a surprising turn of events because I was...*spoiler* sure that Lillian was going to end up with Dr. Graves. (Which I'm glad she didn't because I despised him for some reason.) Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dear John, I've never been so pumped to see a movie before.
Dear John is an excellent book and well written. I've never read a book by Sparks, but I can safely say that I am a fan. It was a page turner and left you eager to find out what happens next between Savannah and John. I read 145 pages in one day. I'm so glad I read this book. I feel that it really demonstrates what true love is. I've never had the desire to see a movie so bad until I saw the trailer. I hope the movie does this book justice. This book was well worth my money. I hate buying a book and it be a total bore. Hope my review helps. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great entertainment
This charming and fun novel is about a high-powered Hollywood professional who comes to a small Texas town for her show, American Megastar, the hottest thing on television. She's the producer. The mystery sets in when she keeps crossing paths with a handsome cowboy who may not be the country boy he appears to be.

Everyone in town seems to already know all about the surprise reunion that Mandalay Florentino has come to arrange. What's she to do? The local star has disappeared. The gossip from the west coast is that she's gone off with a "bad boy" actor.

Well, everyone seems to be living bored lives in the little town until the glamorous newcomer shows up. Life suddenly comes alive with mystery and romance and action and the bored residents find themselves at the center of all the action. Bored lives no more!

One of my favorite parts is when Imagene Doll, an elderly woman, rides the roller coaster for the very first time.

A delightful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!!!
I really enjoyed the down home humor in this book! In such Hollywood obsessed times it is nice to step back and look at it from a small town view which is perfectly depicted in this story, a must read!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Dee-lightful
This is a lovely, funny, poignant, story about a small town in Texas. The speech patterns make this an easy amble down main street.

This is the story of an American Idol type contest where Amber is a contestant. Amber is a very poor child with three brothers being raised by an alcoholic grandfather since their parents died. Mandalay is a TV producer in charge of secretly making arrangements for Amber's surprise concert after being named to the final 5 with an evil boss. Imagine is an elderly lady whose husband and love of her life died a year before.

Mandalay arrives in Daily, Texas to find that her job is in jeopardy if things don't go well and things don't appear to be going smoothly at all.

This book really surprised me. It is written from both Mandalay's and Imagine's point of view which is a bit off putting at first. No sooner do you become involved with a storyline then you turn the page and you have someone else talking. I almost stopped reading this after the first few chapters and I'm glad I didn't. I totally enjoyed this story, the characters became people I'd like to know, the town a place I'd like to live. It is well written and the author certainly understands small Texas towns and has the speech pattern down. I could actually hear the characters talking. Her use of Texas metaphors is outstanding and laugh out loud funny.

Good book for an easy, fun read.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun, easy read
I didn't have a lot of expectations for this book, but was pleasantly surprised. It was quirky, funny and romantic. The storytelling was a seamless switch off between two main characters. It dealt with a lot of issues in an uplifting way, but didn't get mired down with trying to be preachy. It was really just a lot of fun but provides room for introspection while you read. It was a pretty quick read, and I was sucked into the story. I liked the characters a lot. Not a classic, but definitely one I would recommend to my friends!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book makes me laugh!!

Product Description

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of the first twelve short stories based on the famous detective, including the cases of The Red-Headed League, The Speckled Band, and A Scandal in Bohemia. Holmes will need to use his various skills, including an aptitude for acting and disguise, tracking footprints, hand to hand combat, deciphering different types of tobacco ash, and knowledge of psychology to solve cases of blackmail, treachery and murder. Sherlock Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skilful use of deductive reasoning, astute observation, and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Deductive reasoning allows Holmes to impressively reveal a stranger's occupation. Similarly, by studying inanimate objects, he is able to make astonishingly detailed deductions about their owners. This mindset was a major innovation in the field of crime fiction, inspiring authors like Robert J. Sawyer, Neil Gaiman and Stephen King.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for a mature reader, great for the younger set.
I was expecting something great but was disappointed. After just finishing two other classics, Steinbeck's East of Eden and Lewis' Main Street, I thought I would continue in the classics mode. I am sure it was a great book in its time but if you are used to something like what I mentioned above, then it is not for you. If you are a young reader than I would highly recommend it. The stories are short and the language is not too difficult. The endings are somewhat predictable but maybe not for a younger reader.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the world of Sherlock Holmes
I originally downloaded this collection of short stories in preparation for the Sherlock Holmes major motion picture that was coming out in 2009. As someone who had never read any of Sherlock Holmes' tales, this was a perfect introduction into the kind of stories Sir Arthur Conan Doyle penned for the legendary Holmes and Dr. Watson.

The Kindle formatting could have used a little work; a currency sign that was apparently being used in the public domain version the Kindle version was "ported" from and instead of a currency sign being shown, miscellaneous characters were. But, all in all, a slight blip and nothing truly enjoyment-breaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars A timeless hero
Spending so much of my day plugged into the internet, peering at my iPhone, staring at Excel spreadsheets, it has been an absolute pleasure reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes(on my Kindle, I must admit). I am reminded, in adventure after adventure, that there is no substitute for a sharp mind and astute observation. As I watch the master investigator calmly solve the most "singular" of mysteries through the eyes of Dr. James Watson, I almost want to myself be transported back to 19th century London.

If you haven't read any of Conan Doyle's stories, they are worth perusing. I only read a dozen of Holmes' adventures. But in those stories, I grew intimately close with both the detective and his trusty sidekick and doctor-cum-biographer, Watson. I came to admire Holmes' heroic stoicism, encyclopedic memory, and sharp wit.

Each of the adventures follows a somewhat similar plot structure. The adventure opens with a shot into Watson's or Holmes' personal life. You might hear briefly about Watson's life as a doctor, or get a glimpse of Holmes' tobacco, alcohol, or cocaine habits (yes, the rumors are true--Holmes does cocaine). At some point, Watson ends up at Holmes' pad on Baker Street. Both men are then found lounging, Holmes in his "dressing gown," both men likely smoking, drinking, and enjoying a fine meal, usually arms' length from a cozy fire.

Watson, the narrator, will then tell us how, in all of his time with Holmes, the case he is about to elucidate is the most "singular" one yet. Then one of them will see or hear someone approaching their home base; inevitably, the bell will ring and in will enter yet another all-but-hopeless client. We'll get a detailed description of the client's physical appearance, from the clothes on his or her back to the flushness of the face. We'll also always get an idea of what class the client falls into; most regularly, the clients are from higher classes. The client will give us a detailed account of his or her problems as Holmes and Watson listen intently. It is here that the reader is supposed to do the detective work to piece together clues to solve the case. Of course, most of what the client tells us seems unrelated and inane; Holmes will remind us that the simplest cases are the hardest ones, and the smallest of details often the most important.

In most cases, the client has a suspicion that the police's conclusions on the case were flawed. In almost every case, the police were consulted and ended up being wrong indeed. Holmes generally requires a trip to the crime scene, sometimes in costume, and the readers have the privilege to join him with Watson. But most trips are simply chances for Holmes to confirm what he already suspected. Guns may be drawn, extreme danger is almost always encountered, and Holmes emerges the hero. Holmes has a penchant for withholding his conclusions from us until the very end of the story, however, so as the reader follows Holmes' movements at the crime scenes, the reader must do some sleuthing as well.

Holmes will finally tell us what actually happened, and the seemingly innocuous clues from earlier in the chapter prove to be essential to the weaving of the truth. Holmes prefers to strike a deal with the crimes' perpetrators rather than offering them to the police. The clients offer to give Holmes unlimited reward for a job well done, and Holmes calmly requests only that which will defer the cost of his work. He gets enough pleasure out of a job professionally well-done.

Because of the similarities between stories, I recommend taking Holmes in limited doses. But his is a very powerful medicine, one that rejuvenates the mind and strengthens the character. As an example of someone who betters the world by doing what he loves, Sherlock Holmes is a timeless hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless classic, priceless entertainment
I picked up the Sherlock Holmes Complete Collection because my mom had already downloaded it and I was mildly curious. Holmes was the best book I've read in a while, definately my favorite in the Mystery genre.

I love the characters. Doyle whips up such fantastically real people out of no where with the most outrageous situations and stories. The main characters are priceless. Holmes has a very deep compassion for humanity buried among his quirks and strange habits. Watson is such a genuine, sympathetic companion and narrator that it feels like a friend telling a story over coffee.

Let me put it this way, I'm bitterly upset that I finished the series. Bitterly. I wish with all my heart that I could just have a fresh Sherlock Holmes mystery every day. Definately a book I'll pick up again and recommend to everyone I know. My brother read them when he was a preteen/teenager, and I loved them at 24 y/o. I'm sure that a more mature audience would appreciate Holmes, also.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book RULES (haha)
...but seriously.

This books is a nice concise version of a much more drawn out book on dietary dealings. More than anything else it's helped me as a food shopper. Just take the rules to heart and they will guide you to MUCH healthier food purchases. This is not really a diet book or a weightloss proposition, it's a plea for healthier eating in general. Much akin to the SlowFood movement, the author is asking eaters to put a higher value on the food they eat in order to enjoy it in moderation. Eating the suggested foods always leaves me feeling better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Read
A wonderfully short and concise guide to food and eating for someone like me who has many interests and does not want to get bogged down in some wordy dissatation about nutrition that interferes in my main pursuit of writing run-on sentences.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the one you should read
This was really good, I liked it very much. To me it is the synthesis of his bigger book and proves my point that most books are much too long and the vital information can be synthesized down to one chapter. This is the one I will turn to for ongoing reminders and inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Read Food Rules
I thoroughly enjoyed Food Rules. This little book is easy to read and full of simple, common sense concepts. Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm buying this for my kids
This book codifies the conclusions of a person who has thought about what food should go into our mouths. There are books out there that are much thicker, that have the studies and academic papers to back up what they say, and they have their place. But my kids aren't going to read those books, at least not yet. Mr. Pollan has no citations, no details, nothing to bog down the reader. It is a quick read. It makes a lot of sense. It takes into account the fact that we eat for more reasons than to add nutrients to the body. And it says the same thing in several different ways. My kids all have their own homes, do their own cooking. I hope this book will help them be healthy. It all makes sense, it's easy to digest, and it's not a straight jacket.

Did I need the wisdom of this book? Probably not. I was raised by a mother who worried what went into my mouth as a child, and I pondered the same question when raising my children. I have read extensively, listened, pondered. But I'm not sure my kids have, and I know my husband hasn't. These catchy little 'rules' pack quite a wallop. I especially like Rule 37, and will be using it on Dear Husband when he reaches for the white bread.

This book doesn't say a lot that is new, cutting edge. It says sensible, basic rules on healthy eating in a way that we can easily remember. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stephen King, take note: here's writing to aspire to.
Stephen King, take note: here's writing to aspire to.

The richest, most effective prose takes you on a journey you'll not soon forget in this wonderful novel. Not a purple word in the bunch, not a meretricious line to be found, nary a letter out of place. Mary E. DeMuth is the Rembrandt of novelists.

Characters and story so profound you'll wonder why the store bookshelves today are so filled with pulp.

(And by the way, I'm not Christian or Catholic. I'm not another prattling zealot. Just an average reader.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review of Daisy Chain by Mary E. DeMuth
"Bright, engaging, often sad and heartbreaking - all woven together with the elements of Christian life. Don't miss out on this one!"

Perhaps I loved this book because I live in the south. Perhaps I loved it because it provoked my memory to my early Christian walk. Perhaps I loved it because it just read like home to me. Whatever the reason, Mary E. DeMuth's `Daisy Chain` is forever etched into my memory as one of my favorite books.

In the summer of his fourteenth year, Jed Pepper's best friend, Daisy Marie Chance, has gone missing. Her last words to him, `You'll regret it', haunt him as he realizes that he is more afraid of father's retribution than of his friend's safety.

Jed is about to break free from childhood cares and be cast harshly into the real world where danger does exist and bad things do happen.

In the small town of Defiance and in the events that follow the day Daisy went missing, most (if not all) of the challenges Christians face are written into the various characters, making them come alive with the struggles we, as readers, face each day.

Struggles like Jed's feelings of failure for not protecting Daisy which prompt questions to and about God's providence. His view of God has been shaped by his father, who has allowed the rules of the Bible to choke out the grace he once knew in the beginning.

Jed asks himself question after question as he struggles to make sense of why a loving God would allow such a sadness. His memories of his best friend are almost too painful at times.

Meanwhile, as God surely does in our own lives at times, new friends enter his life revealing that yes - God has rules, and yes - God doesn't make sense sometimes, and yes - God will do as God pleases, but there is still joy to be known in friendship with an old black man named Hixon, there is still wonder to be known in an old bald women named Muriel, there is still messages of encouragement from his mother each morning.

This is a marvelous read. I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series named `Slow Burn.'

I can't forget Daisy. Her spunk, her creativity, her ability to see the best in others--she grabbed my heart from the beginning. But everything's not as it seems in Defiance, TX. Kids don't always come home, parents don't always have their child's best interest at heart, and love is often found in unlikely places. Gripping, haunting, uncomfortably real. I couldn't put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Daisy Chain
If this book had not been written by a Christian author I would have quit with it early on. I do not like secular books about preachers, and christians that are shown in negative light. Because this was written by a Christian, I continued with it. The father, a preacher is abusive to his wife and children. But by the time I was finished with the book I was wanting the next....This is a trilogy.

5-0 out of 5 stars In A League of Its Own!
Through the riveting novel "Daisy Chain," Mary E. Demuth has set a new standard for Christian fiction and few writers will ever come close to reaching it. Demuth doesn't want you to walk away from her books simply "reading a good story"... she wants you to "live" them and be transformed by their message.

You may find your heart pounding as Jed Pepper runs to check on Daisy. You will find yourself filled with anger at Jed's father who portrays a heart for God as a preacher, yet is abusive behind closed doors. You'll want to sit down with Jed's mother and let her cry on your shoulder. You might wish you could go to Defiance and rescue Jed and his sister, help look for Daisy, and pray in hope for the brokenness that has consumed the town, but there's no need to. The author introduces you to God's grace in the form of Hixon and Muriel. Demuth leaves no stitch of the story loose or undone. She has weaved a perfect tapestry of the truth of tragedy, yet the assured triumph through God's mercy and grace. Each character is as mysterious and intriguing as our Creator who has made each of us. The author brilliantly keeps you on the edge of your seat while taking you through the realities of a fallen world. She doesn't beat around the bush; she doesn't try to sugar coat pain. "Daisy Chain" will open your heart and your eyes so that you will get a glimpse of what it's like to look at others as God does.

Mary E. Demuth has a God-given talent to write that most could work towards their whole life and never even come close. Each word is carefully chosen and artfully written. You'll be up all night reading "Daisy Chain" and find yourself hoping there is no end to Mary's incredible story telling of Defiance, TX. Lucky for you, the second book in the Texas Trilogy is released and you don't have to wait to read it ("A Slow Burn"). My advice...buy them both together...you won't want to wait to go down to the book store or the time it will take for shipping!

National Bestseller

An international publishing sensation, Stieg Larsson's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo combines murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue into one satisfyingly complex and entertainingly atmospheric novel.

Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden's wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pieced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best of the Month, September 2008: Once you start The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, there's no turning back. This debut thriller--the first in a trilogy from the late Stieg Larsson--is a serious page-turner rivaling the best of Charlie Huston and Michael Connelly. Mikael Blomkvist, a once-respected financial journalist, watches his professional life rapidly crumble around him. Prospects appear bleak until an unexpected (and unsettling) offer to resurrect his name is extended by an old-school titan of Swedish industry. The catch--and there's always a catch--is that Blomkvist must first spend a year researching a mysterious disappearance that has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. With few other options, he accepts and enlists the help of investigator Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood genius with a cache of authority issues. Little is as it seems in Larsson's novel, but there is at least one constant: you really don't want to mess with the girl with the dragon tattoo. --Dave Callanan

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Page Turner
Mystery, suspense, great dialog, and intriguing analysis of personal relationships are just some of reasons why you will find yourself immersed in Stieg Larson's first novel.

This fast paced exciting novel centers around an investigation being conducted by Mikael Blomkvist, a somewhat burnt out journalist, who is on self imposed exile from his editorial duties at Millenium magazine due to an ongoing trumped up libel suit. Blomkvist is hired by an elderly, emotionally plagued, rich industrialist, to use his investigative skillset in trying to solve the 35 year old mystery of his missing 16 year old niece.

Larsen's description of his characters are vivid. It appears each member of the secluded Vanger clan sports some type of phobia, depression, or anxiety disorder. Wait to you meet Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood, tattooed, computer geek who assists Blomkvist in the investigation.

This nearly 600 page fiction is a quick read due to the literary prowness of Larsen. You will not be disappointed. 5 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars Swedish murder mystery
I'm in the process of reading this fascinating book. Did you know there is a statue of limitations on murder in Sweden? There is no such limitation in the U.S. on murder. Makes me think about which is the better approach. I highly recommend this book because it's a great mystery and it also gives the reader a peek into a different culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will not be able to put it down!
This book did not seem too interesting to me in the beginning but once I was past chapter 1, I was totally into it. The author started describing the lives of two different characters and I couldn't wait to see what can possibly bring them together.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, even if you don't like crime thrillers
Synopsis: Mikael Blomkvist is a financial journalist who has recently been convicted of aggravated libel of industrialist Hans Wennerstrom. Henrik Vanger is the head of the powerful Vanger Corporation, haunted by the disappearance of his niece, Harriet Vanger, decades ago. Henrik employs Mikael to review the evidence of the disappearance, convinced he will be able to help solve the mystery. Lisbeth Salander is an enigmatic security specialist originally hired by Vanger to provide information on Mikael, but who becomes further involved and assists Mikael in the investigation. The Vanger family history is more complicated than Mikael and Lisbeth could have imagined and the truth is more disturbing and dangerous than they are prepared for.

As a general rule, I really don't enjoy crime thrillers, they are just not my cup of tea. While I don't generally have a problem with violence in books, I'm not really into stories where violent acts and murder (usually against women) are the crux of the tale. I had thought I wouldn't read this book because of the genre, but I had heard such good things about it from reviews and friends who have read it I decided to put it on my TBR list, although it sat waaaaayyy down the bottom. Then the other day I got a voucher to purchase it for half price so I thought what the hey, I'll give it a read. Strangely, I really enjoyed this book, even though it reconfirmed for me that crime thrillers are not my thing. The depth of detail Larsson uses to create his characters gives the reader a visual sense of their life and the world they live in. I really love Salander as a character, Larsson has done a brilliant job of describing the world of a person with Asperger's syndrome from their own point of view. A small part of me groans at the stereotypical-ness of the fact that she is a genius, yet she really is a great and unique woman and one you SERIOUSLY don't want to mess with. The scene of her revenge against her abuser alone is worth reading the book for.

The large host of characters and many plot lines are what makes this book better than alot of other crime thrillers, Larsson keeps them clear and easy to follow and completes every part of the story, nothing is left unresolved. If you are a fan of crime thrillers you will undoubtedly love this book, if you are like me and they aren't your favourite genre I would still recommend stepping outside your genre square and give it a try. I have put the other two books on my TBR list and am looking forward to finding out more about Salander and Blomkvist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great first start
I was impressed w/this book. It took a 100 or so pages to get into it, and it times, it's a bit cliche (for a murder mystery), but Larsson presents some exciting twists & turns to the various story lines. I look forward to reading the other two books in the series. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Felt like I was in church
I was interested in the story line at first, but it just took forever to get to the end. I actually skipped alot of the parts and still didn't feel that I missed anything. Glad that I got it when it was free for Kindle because I would've really been upset if I paid for it. To much of a sermon for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good vs evil Well written
WE must have these come across some of these folks in real life. Verv well written. Enjoy

1-0 out of 5 stars Anyone who is not heavy into religion should skip it
Yikes, this one could have been far better without the multi page rants on finding God. Give us a break if we wanted to be in church we wouldn't be reading a murder mystery!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Just Christian Literature
I purchased this book as a Kindle freebie. If I was actually paying for it I probably would have first read the tags a little closer. I wasn't initially aware that it is Christian literature. That being said, I found the story and characters to be quite interesting and the Christian element to be a lesser part of the story line. All in all, I did enjoy reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this series!
This is the first book in the series, and I HIGHLY recommend you read the entire series. I am not into "religious" books, but these are the exception! ... Read more

In Game Change, John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, two of the country’s leading political reporters, use their unrivaled access to pull back the curtain on the Obama, Clinton, McCain, and Palin campaigns.

3-0 out of 5 stars Same ol-same ol
I really enjoyed the book at first, then the further i read the more I began to see the "same ol,same ol" pattern of the left wing media. Barack and Michelle Obama's image is tenderly handled through out the book while all the other players are painted as unsavory, "human" characters. The authors attempt to continue propping up the image of Obama as the ever cool, all seeing, all knowing, all forgiving, golden one falls on a populice that has come out from under the ether and knows better. Hence the less than stellar rating of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST read if you are interested in politics and/or the 2008 campaign.
This book is simply FASCINATING. If you are interested in politics or people or the last Presidential election, you have to read this book. It is incredibly well written and researched. I have to say, for all of the criticism of it being salacious, those bits are not even the most interesting. It is much more the nuances and little shifts that elevated the two candidates to be their respective parties nominees. You've probably already read or heard about the gossipy bits in the news. It's everything else that makes this book such a captivating read. I cannot fathom why the overall rating is so low. This is an unequivocal 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Read
GAME CHANGE is one terrific read. It zooms along like high speed train ride in an amusement park, offering enough twists and turns to leave the reader breathless. There are jaw dropping anecdotes about all who made the 2008 election so memorable, as well as thoughtful analysis of what was going on behind the scenes. There are heroes and there are villains and, I suppose, they will depend on whatever your political leanings are. For me, I found the book to be fair and informative. One terrific read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shocking, not worth the $ or time
This book entered the field with a lot of hype but it turned out to be a huge disappointment. It is very obviously Obama biased but shows even him in a bad light. I found it especially disturbing that those who are portrayed to be our smartest and brightest seem unable to find words other than expletives to express themselves. If this is an accurate representation of our leaders we're in a sad shape. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS........
I followed the campaign every day so naturally there was not alot of new material here for me....but I loved reading the timeline of events and wish I had known at the time that the McCain effort was doomed from the beginning. I would have slept much better for all of those months. This is really compelling stuff and written extremely well. I feel like a walking encyclopedia on campaign o8 . The Palin info is priceless. Getting to know Obama in a more intimate way made me even more proud of the country for getting it right. I am a true Elizabeth Edwards fan so I was disturbed to read some of the things written about her....but I belive these authors completely. No one is perfect....but really....this book is.... ...
